Richmond Hill City Council
Richmond Hill City Council is the governing body for the Canadian city of Richmond Hill, Ontario. Council serves a four-year term, after which a new council is elected by qualified electors in Richmond Hill. Richmond Hill City Council consists of a Mayor, six Ward Councillors and two Regional and Local Councillors. The mayor and the regional and local councillors additionally serve on the York Regional Council representing the interests of the residents of Richmond Hill. The mayor serves as the leader of council, presiding over meetings to maintain order, and calling special meetings when needed. The mayor and councillors both propose, oversee the administration and finances of Richmond Hill and direction the operations of the city's departments, as well as meeting with residents and government agencies to discuss issues relevant to Richmond Hill and its residents. Richmond Hill, Ontario
Richmond Hill (Canada 2021 Census, 2021 population: 202,022) is a city in south-central Regional Municipality of York, York Region, Ontario, Canada. Part of the Greater Toronto Area, it is the York Region's third most populous municipality and the 27th most populous municipality in Canada. Richmond Hill is situated between the cities of Markham and Vaughan, north of Thornhill, and south of Aurora. Richmond Hill has seen significant population growth since the 1990s. Bryon Wilfert
Bryon J. Wilfert (born July 14, 1952) is a former Canadian politician. He was a Liberal member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1997 to 2011 who represented the GTA riding of Richmond Hill until his defeat during the 2011 federal election. Background Wilfert has Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Toronto, as well as a degree in public administration from St. Lawrence College in Kingston. In June 2011, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, Japan's second highest honour, by Emperor Akihito. James Langstaff (reeve)
James Miles Langstaff (June 3, 1825 – 1889) was the reeve of Richmond Hill, Ontario in 1880 and a village councillor there in 1878. Born in Richmond Hill, at the Langstaff residence around today's Highway 7 and Yonge Street, an area then known as Langstaff Corners. He was the son of Jon Langstaff and Lucy Miles and grandson of Abner Mills. Langstaff first studied medicine as a "house pupil" under John Rolph in Toronto. He later travelled to study in England, at Guy's Hospital in London. After completing his schooling, he was licensed by the Upper Canada Medical Board and he set up a medical practice in Unionville in April 1849 but after only four months relocated it to Richmond Hill. In 1850 and 1851, Langstaff was listed as a professor at Rolph's Toronto School of Medicine. Langstaff married Mary Ann Miller in 1854. William Trench III
William Trench III (October 21, 1831 - April 12, 1896) was the reeve of Richmond Hill, Ontario from 1875–1879 and 1881 - 1882. Born in Dunbar, Scotland, Trench came to Elgin Mills, Ontario with his family in 1842. Trench learned the blacksmith trade from his father and set up a shop in Richmond Hill in 1857. In 1866, Richmond Hill set up its first fire brigade, and Trench was chosen the first fire chief. Trench Carriage Works Trench later owned a carriage factory named the "Trench Carriage Works" in Richmond Hill that was one of the village's leading employer during the 1870s through 1890s. William Harrison (Reeve)
William Harrison (May 10, 1834 – March 2, 1922) was a harness and saddle maker who served as the second reeve of Richmond Hill, Ontario, in 1874. He was the community's first historian. Born in Bath, England, his family moved to a farm north of Richmond Hill in 1843. After the death of his father a mere nine months after the family arrived in Canada, the family moved into the Richmond Hill community. Harrison opened a saddle and harness maker's shop in Richmond Hill in 1856. In Richmond Hill, Harrison took an active role in society. He was involved in organising the community's first fire brigade. He was a founding member of the Richmond Hill Mechanics' Institute and Literary Society. Harrison closed his shop in 1908. Abraham Law
Abraham Law (October 13, 1806 - February 14, 1885) was the first Reeve of Richmond Hill, Ontario. Law was married to Elizabeth Klinck, with whom he fathered thirteen children. Law was born in Pennsylvania. In 1824 he came to Upper Canada with his parents, who settled outside of Stouffville. Law came to Richmond Hill in 1826. In Richmond Hill he took up employment as a general merchant. He soon came to own a tannery where he worked as a tanner. In 1827, he purchased a lot at the corner of Yonge Street and today's Richmond Street, where he built an estate he named "Richmond Villa" in 1833.
