Richard Woodruff (Upper Canada Politician)
Richard Woodruff (1784–1872) was a merchant and political figure in Upper Canada. Richard Woodruff was born in New England in 1784 and came to the Niagara peninsula in Upper Canada, settling at St. Davids. He operated a mill there with his brother William. He served in the local militia during the War of 1812, becoming captain in 1835. In 1833, he was named justice of the peace in the Niagara District. Upper Canada
The Province of Upper Canada (french: link=no, province du Haut-Canada) was a part of British Canada established in 1791 by the Kingdom of Great Britain, to govern the central third of the lands in British North America, formerly part of the Province of Quebec since 1763. Upper Canada included all of modern-day Southern Ontario and all those areas of Northern Ontario in the which had formed part of New France, essentially the watersheds of the Ottawa River or Lakes Huron and Superior, excluding any lands within the watershed of Hudson Bay. Niagara Peninsula
The Niagara Peninsula is an area of land lying between the southwestern shore of Lake Ontario and the northeastern shore of Lake Erie, in Ontario, Canada. Technically an isthmus rather than a peninsula, it stretches from the Niagara River in the east to Hamilton, Ontario, in the west. William Woodruff (Upper Canada Politician)
William Woodruff (October 1, 1793 – June 1860) was a merchant and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Middleton, Connecticut in 1793 and came to the Niagara peninsula in Upper Canada with his family around 1795, settling at St. Davids in 1812. He built a mill and general store there, partnering in business with his brother Richard, who also served as a member of the legislative assembly. He served in the local militia during the War of 1812, becoming captain in 1827. War Of 1812
The War of 1812 (18 June 1812 – 17 February 1815) was fought by the United States of America and its indigenous allies against the United Kingdom and its allies in British North America, with limited participation by Spain in Florida. It began when the United States declared war on 18 June 1812 and, although peace terms were agreed upon in the December 1814 Treaty of Ghent, did not officially end until the peace treaty was ratified by Congress on 17 February 1815. A justice of the peace (JP) is a judicial officer of a lower or ''puisne'' court, elected or appointed by means of a commission ( letters patent) to keep the peace. The Niagara District was a historic district in Upper Canada. Created in 1798 from the Home District, it existed until 1849. Lincoln County is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was formed in 1792. In 1845, the southern portion of Lincoln County was separated to form Welland County. In some census and election records from the late 19th century, the townships of Caistor and Gainsborough (which can be seen on the map below) were enumerated as part of Monck County, while Grantham and Niagara Townships were enumerated as part of Niagara County. However, neither Monck nor Niagara ever existed as incorporated municipal counties, but rather as electoral districts. In 1970, Lincoln and Welland Counties were amalgamated to form the Regional Municipality of Niagara. Reform Party (pre-Confederation)
The Reform movement in Upper Canada was a political movement in British North America in the mid-19th century. It started as a rudimentary grouping of loose coalitions that formed around contentious issues. Support was gained in Parliament through petitions meant to sway MPs. However, ''organized'' Reform activity emerged in the 1830s when Reformers, like Robert Randal, Jesse Ketchum, Peter Perry, Marshall Spring Bidwell, and Dr. William Warren Baldwin, began to emulate the organizational forms of the British Reform Movement and organized Political Unions under the leadership of William Lyon Mackenzie. The British Political Unions had successfully petitioned for the Great Reform Act of 1832 that eliminated much political corruption in the English Parliamentary system.
