Richard Wiese Sr
Richard Wiese (September 25, 1929 – September 18, 2021) was an American aviator. He entered the record books on August 14, 1959 when he became the first pilot to solo an airplane from east to west across the Pacific Ocean. The route was from San Francisco, California to Sydney, Australia. ''The New York Times'' (January 30, 1983) referred to him as the "Lone Eagle of the Pacific". Wiese was not attempting to set a record or enter the history books at the time of his flight, and he wasn't even aware that his flight would be notable. In 1959, Wiese was a pilot for Pan American Airlines when he heard rumors of mass layoffs at the airline. To provide a second source of income, he started ferrying plans as a side job. Since Pan-Am did not allow its pilots to do side jobs, he worked under the alias Richard Merrick. He was hired to fly an aircraft from San Antonio, Texas to Sydney, Australia. Cessna 310
The Cessna 310 is an American four-to-six-seat, low-wing, twin-engine monoplane produced by Cessna between 1954 and 1980. It was the first twin-engine aircraft that Cessna put into production after World War II. Development The 310 first flew on January 3, 1953, with deliveries starting in late 1954. The sleek modern lines of the new twin were backed up by innovative features such as engine exhaust thrust augmenter tubes and the storage of all fuel in tip tanks in early models. In 1964, the engine exhaust was changed to flow under the wing instead of the augmenter tubes, which were considered to be noisy. Richard Wiese (born July 13, 1959) is an American explorer, the longest serving President of The Explorers Club, and Executive Producer and Host of the multiple Emmy Award-winning ABC and PBS program, Born to Explore. Early life and education Wiese was born on Long Island, New York. His father, Richard Wiese, Sr., was the first man to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean in an aircraft. Richard first climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at the age of 11. He attended St. Anthony's High School in Smithtown NY, and then Brown University. At Brown, he served as JFK Jr.’s big brother in their Phi Psi fraternity, subsequently graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology and Biology.
