Richard Small (horse Trainer)
Richard W. "Dickie" Small (December 2, 1945 – April 4, 2014) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing trainer. Raised in the industry, his father, Douglas Small Jr., was a successful trainer as was his uncle, Sidney Watters Jr., a National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame inductee. Richard Small learned the business from his father but the Vietnam War temporarily interrupted his career when he served three years with the army Green Berets. Following his discharge from military service, he returned to take over his father's stable in 1974. A highlight of Small's career was his 1994 win of the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic with Concern. Ridden by Jerry Bailey, the three-year-old colt was owned and bred by Robert Meyerhoff. Suburban Handicap
The Suburban Stakes is an American Grade II Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Open to horses age three and older, it is now run at the mile distance on dirt for a $700,000 purse. Named after the City and Suburban Handicap in England, the Suburban had its 133rd running in 2019. Inaugurated at the Sheepshead Bay Race Track in 1884, it was run there through 1910. However, the 1908 passage of the Hart–Agnew anti-betting legislation by the New York Legislature under Republican Governor Charles Evans Hughes led to a state-wide shutdown of racing in 1911 and 1912. A February 21, 1913 ruling by the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division saw horse racing return in 1913. Conniver Stakes
The Conniver Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in March at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. It is open to fillies and mares three years old and up and is run at seven furlongs on the dirt. An ungraded stakes race, it offers a purse of $100,000. The race was named in honor of Conniver, the Maryland-bred that was named the nation's top handicap mare in 1948 during a season that included wins in the Brooklyn Handicap and Vagrancy Handicap (defeating Gallorette as well as Stymie). She also won the Beldame Stakes, the Comely Stakes and the Vagrancy Handicap. She was the brown daughter of Discovery out of The Schemer out of Challenger II and was bred by Alfred G. Vanderbilt II. Arkansas Derby
The Arkansas Derby is an American flat Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held annually in April at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It is currently a Grade I race run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on dirt. In 2004, to celebrate its 100th anniversary, Oaklawn Park offered a $5 million bonus to any horse that could sweep its three-year-old graded stakes, the Rebel Stakes and the Arkansas Derby, and then take the Kentucky Derby. Smarty Jones's collected the bonus. The exposure from Smarty Jones subsequent run at the Triple Crown helped increase participation from the top three-year-olds in the country to the point where the American Graded Stakes Committee made the Arkansas Derby a Grade I race in 2010. All Brandy Stakes
The All Brandy Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in autumn, usually in November, at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. It is open to Filly, fillies and mares three years old and up and is raced on Grass, turf at a distance of 1-1/8 miles (9 furlongs). The race was named in honor of the Maryland-Bred Champion All Brandy, who was named Champion three-year-old filly in 1962. She was bred by John A. Manfuso Sr. the former owner of the Maryland Jockey Club. Manfuso rated her as the best racehorse he had bred in over 50 years in the business. Born in 1959, All Brandy was sired by Double Brandy and out of Alluring. Maryland Million Distaff Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in October since 1986 primarily at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland or at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. To be eligible for the Maryland Million Distaff Handicap, a filly or mare must be sired by a stallion who stands in Maryland. Due to that restriction the race is classified as a non-graded or "listed" stakes race and is not eligible for grading by the American Graded Stakes Committee. Twixt Stakes
The Twixt Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in November at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. It is a restricted stakes race open to Maryland-bred fillies three years old and up and is run at seven furlongs on the dirt. An ungraded stakes race, it offers a purse of $75,000 as of 2017. The race was named in honor of the filly Twixt, a Maryland-bred Champion each year that she raced, from 1972 through 1975. Mrs. John M. Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. John Merryman, and themselves owned her. The Jennings Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. Raced in December each year, it is open to horses age three and older that are registered Maryland-breds and is contested on dirt over a distance of 1 mile (8 furlongs). Prior to 1993, the race alternated locations between Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The race has been run at four different distances: miles, miles, 1 mile, and 6 furlongs. The Cotillion Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Parx Racing and Casino in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. It is run in late September or early October as a prelude to the annual Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
