Richard Ryan (politician)
Richard Ryan is a politician in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has served on the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough council since 2009 and on the Montreal city council since 2013 as a member of Projet Montréal. Private career Ryan was a prominent member of the Mile End Citizens' Committee before entering political life. He helped to organize a series of meetings in Montreal's Mile End neighbourhood in early 2009 to encourage greater citizen involvement in urban planning, after the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough council announced a nine-million dollar revitalization program for the area's former industrial zone. The Montreal City Council (french: Conseil municipal de Montréal) is the governing body in the mayor–council government in the city of Montreal, Quebec. The head of the city government in Montreal is the mayor, who is first among equals in the city council. The council is a democratically elected institution and is the final decision-making authority in the city, although much power is centralized in the executive committee. 2009 Montreal Municipal Election
The city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, held a municipal election at the same time as numerous other municipalities in Quebec, on November 1, 2009. Municipal elections were held in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada on November 5, 2017 as part of the 2017 Quebec municipal elections. Voters elected 65 positions on the Montreal City Council, including the mayor, borough mayors, and city councillors, as well as 38 borough councillors. Results Despite early polls giving incumbent mayor Denis Coderre a comfortable lead, the election concluded with Valérie Plante of Projet Montréal winning the mayoralty race by a margin of over 27,000 votes, becoming the first woman and first representative of Projet Montréal to be elected mayor of Montreal. Jane Jacobs
Jane Jacobs (''née'' Butzner; 4 May 1916 – 25 April 2006) was an American-Canadian journalist, author, theorist, and activist who influenced urban studies, sociology, and economics. Her book '' The Death and Life of Great American Cities'' (1961) argued that " urban renewal" and " slum clearance" did not respect the needs of city-dwellers.
