Richard Lumley, 13th Earl Of Scarbrough
Richard Osbert Lumley, 13th Earl of Scarbrough (born 18 May 1973), known as Viscount Lumley until 2004, is a British peer and landowner. The elder son of Richard Lumley, 12th Earl of Scarbrough, and his wife Lady Elizabeth, Lumley was educated at Eton College and was a Page of Honour to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother from 1 March 1989 to 1 January 1991. He succeeded his father in 2004. In 2007, he married Henrietta Elfrida Helen Boyson. Scarbrough was appointed a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire on 11 April 2011. The landed gentry, or the ''gentry'', is a largely historical British social class of landowners who could live entirely from rental income, or at least had a country estate. While distinct from, and socially below, the British peerage, their economic base in land was often similar, and some of the landed gentry were wealthier than some peers. Many gentry were close relatives of peers, and it was not uncommon for gentry to marry into peerage. It is the British element of the wider European class of gentry. Lumley Castle
Lumley Castle is a 14th-century quadrangular castle at Chester-le-Street in the North of England, near the city of Durham and a property of the Earl of Scarbrough. It is a Grade I listed building. It is currently a hotel. History It is named after its original creator, Sir Ralph Lumley, who converted his family manor house into a castle in 1389 after returning from wars in Scotland. However, after being implicated in a plot to overthrow Henry IV he was imprisoned and ultimately executed, forfeiting his lands to the Earl of Somerset. In 1421 the ownership of the castle reverted to Sir Ralph Lumley's grandson, Thomas. Earl of Scarbrough is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1690 for Richard Lumley, 2nd Viscount Lumley. He is best remembered as one of the Immortal Seven who invited William of Orange to invade England and depose his father-in-law James II. Lumley had already been created Baron Lumley, of Lumley Castle in the County of Durham, in 1681, and Viscount Lumley, of Lumley Castle in the County of Durham, in 1689. These titles are also in the Peerage of England. The title of Viscount Lumley, of Waterford, was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1628 for his grandfather Sir Richard Lumley, who later fought as a Royalist in the Civil War. Richard Aldred Lumley, 12th Earl of Scarbrough (5 December 1932 – 23 March 2004), styled Viscount Lumley between 1945 and 1969, was an English nobleman. Education and military service The eldest son of Roger Lumley, 11th Earl of Scarbrough, Lumley was educated at St Peter's Court, where he became a friend of Adrian Swire and Houston Shaw Stewart, and later at Eton College. He did his national service as a second lieutenant in the 11th Hussars, receiving his commission on 3 November 1951, and was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. On 30 September 1952, he was transferred from the national service list to the Queen's Own Yorkshire Dragoons, with seniority from his original date of commission. He was made an acting lieutenant on 12 June 1953. Lumley was commissioned a Territorial Army lieutenant with the Dragoons on 5 December 1955, with seniority from the date of his acting lieutenancy, which he relinquished on 18 July 1956. Maltby is a former mining town and civil parish of 16,688 inhabitants (2011) in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It was historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
