Ricardo Cardona (boxer)
Ricardo Cardona (November 9, 1952 – October 11, 2015) was a Colombian boxer. Professional career Cardona turned pro on September 15, 1973, with a decision over Osvaldo Rojas in Valencia, Venezuela. He won the Colombian super bantamweight title in 1976. On May 7, 1978, he won the WBA World super bantamweight title with a TKO over Hong Soo-hwan in Seoul, South Korea becoming Colombia’s third boxing champion, following Antonio Cervantes and Rodrigo Valdez. He successfully defended the title five times before losing to Leo Randolph in 1980. Cardona fought for four more years, going 5-5 before retiring in 1984 with a record of 26-10-1 (13 KOs). Personal life His brother, Prudencio Cardona, was also a well-known world champion boxer, making the Cardona brothers one of the small numbers of sibling couples to have reached world championship status in the sport. Super Bantamweight
Super bantamweight, also known as junior featherweight, is a weight class in professional boxing, contested from and up to . There were attempts by boxing promoters in the 1920s to establish this weight class, but few sanctioning organizations or state athletic commissions would recognize it. Jack Wolf won recognition as champion when he beat Joe Lynch at Madison Square Garden on September 21, 1922, but afterwards the weight division fell into disuse. The division was revived in the 1970s and the first title fight in 54 years in the division took place in 1976 when the World Boxing Council recognized Rigoberto Riasco as its champion when he defeated Waruinge Nakayama in eight rounds. San Basilio De Palenque
San Basilio de Palenque or Palenque de San Basilio, often referred to by the locals simply as Palenke, is a Palenque village and corregimiento in the Municipality of Mahates, Bolivar in northern Colombia. Palenque was the first free African town in the Americas, and in 2005 was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Orthodox Stance
In combat sports such as boxing, an orthodox stance is one in which the boxer places their left foot farther in front of the right foot, thus having their weaker side closer to the opponent. Because it favors the stronger, dominant side (often the right side; see laterality), the orthodox stance is the most common stance in boxing and MMA. It is mostly used by right-handed boxers. Many boxing champions have fought in an orthodox stance. Alternative stances The corresponding designation for a left-handed boxer is southpaw and is generally a mirror image of the orthodox stance. Professional Boxing
Professional boxing, or prizefighting, is regulated, sanctioned boxing. Professional boxing bouts are fought for a purse bid, purse that is divided between the boxers as determined by contract. Most professional bouts are supervised by a regulatory authority to guarantee the fighters' safety. Prudencio Cardona (December 22, 1951 – August 4, 2019) was a Colombian professional boxer who was world flyweight champion. He represented his native country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. He is the older brother of former super bantamweight world champion, Ricardo Cardona. Professional boxing career Prudencio Cardona made his professional boxing debut on November 2, 1973 defeating Luis Ramos by a four-round decision in Barranquilla, Colombia. Twenty two days later, Cardona earned his first knockout win, knocking out Humberto Ortega in four rounds at Barranquilla. Cardona's first seven fights were in Barranquilla; he won five of these bouts by knockout. Hong Soo-hwan
Hong Soo-hwan (Hangul: 홍수환, born May 26, 1950) is a South Korean former professional boxer who competed between 1969 and 1980. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBA and ''The Ring'' bantamweight titles from 1974 to 1975 and the WBA super-bantamweight title from 1977 to 1978. Professional career Hong turned pro in 1969 and in 1974 captured the WBA and ''The Ring'' bantamweight title with a decision win over Arnold Taylor in a fight in which Taylor was down in the 1st, 5th, and 14th rounds. He lost his title in his 2nd defense to Alfonso Zamora in 1975. In 1977 he captured the vacant WBA super bantamweight title in a 3rd-round knockout of Hector Carrasquilla. Leo Randolph
Leo Randolph (born February 27, 1958) is an American former boxer, who won the Flyweight Gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Amateur career Randolph had a very good amateur career. Randolph was a product of the Tacoma Boys Club amateur program, along with fellow Olympic Gold Medalist Sugar Ray Seales, and future world champions Rocky Lockridge and Johnny Bumphus. Randolph was trained as an amateur and professional by Joe Clough, the head trainer at the Tacoma Boys Club. In 1975 he was the National Golden Gloves Flyweight champion.
