Ribeirinha (Horta)
Ribeirinha is a ''freguesia'' ("civil parish") in the municipality of Horta in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The population in 2011 was 427, in an area of 12.26 km2. It contains the localities Canadinha, Chã da Cruz, Espalhafatos, Lomba dos Espalhafatos and Rua da Igreja. History The parish receives its name from the small river and valley that was occupied during the period of settlement. Riberinha, in Portuguese, literally means small "ribeira", or small river-valley owing to its location. New settlers constructed their village two kilometers from the coast, due to several incursions by pirates. This distance allowed the inhabitants to monitor the coast and plan traps for the invaders. One area, ''Poceirão dos Mouros'', refers to one of these traps where the pirates (the ''Moors of the Canal'', as they were known) were ensnared. Faial Island
Faial Island (), also known in English as Fayal, is a Portugal, Portuguese island of the Central Group (Portuguese: ''Grupo Central'') of the Azores. The Capelinhos Volcano, the westernmost point of the island, may be considered the westernmost point of Europe, if the Monchique Islet, near Flores Island (Azores), Flores Island, is considered part of North America, for it sits on the North American Plate. 1980 Azores Islands Earthquake
Striking the Autonomous Region of Azores on 1 January, the 1980 Azores Island earthquake killed 61 people and injured over 400, causing severe damage on the islands of Terceira and São Jorge. Measuring 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale, it also shook the islands of Pico and Faial, and resulted from a strike slip fracture, typical of other historical Azorean earthquakes. In response to the earthquake, Portuguese president António Ramalho Eanes announced three days of national mourning, while relief efforts, initiated by agents of the local Air Force, were soon accompanied by government-supported agencies. Faial Channel
The Faial-Pico Channel ( pt, Canal Faial-Pico) is an long channel that separates the islands of Faial and Pico in the central group of the archipelago of the Azores. The strait is divided into various depressions, calderas and micro-systems, referred to as ''Baixas''. Geography The Baixa do Norte is located from ''Ponta da Espalamaca'', at a depth of approximately , to a depth reaching below sea level. The leading edge of the ''Baixa do Norte'' reef includes a series of large rocky outcrops, of less than in size. Tambroso
Tambroso is a mountain peak on the Azorian island of Faial. It is located in the civil parish of Ribeirinha, in the municipality of Horta. The mountain, as well as its surrounding land-forms, is geographically close to the volcanic caldera at the center of Faial. The eruptive igneous rocks produced by this caldera forms the base of Tambroso, as well as many other peaks on Faial Island. The whole series of peaks has a maximum elevation at Cabeço Gordo, which is above sea level. Geography and geology The elevation of Tambroso itself reaches to above sea-level. Vitorino Nemésio
Vitorino Nemésio Mendes Pinheiro da Silva (19 December 1901, in Praia da Vitória – 20 February 1978, in Lisbon) was a Portuguese poet, author and intellectual from Terceira, Azores, best known for his novel ''Mau Tempo No Canal'', as well as being a professor in the Faculty of Letters at the University of Lisbon and member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. Biography Vitorino Nemesio was the son of Vitorino Gomes da Silva and Maria da Glória Mendes Pinheiro, and born in Praia da Vitória, on Terceira island, Azores (1901). His early education did not reflect the academic career that he would have; he encountered many problems as a student and was expelled from secondary school, repeating his fifth year of studies. Diogo Das Chagas
Diogo das Chagas, O.F.M. (Diogo of the Holy Wounds); (c. 1584 in Santa Cruz das Flores – c. 1661 in Angra do Heroísmo) was a Portuguese Franciscan friar and historian. He is best known as the author of ''Espelho Cristalino em Jardim de Várias Flores'', an important resource on the colonization of the islands of the central and western groups of the Portuguese archipelago of his native region of the Azores after 1640. Biography Diogo was the son of Mateus Coelho da Costa, Captain-major of the island of Flores, and his wife, Catarina de Fraga Rodovalho.
