Ribblehead Railway Station
Ribblehead is a railway station on the Settle and Carlisle Line, which runs between and via . The station, situated north-west of Leeds, serves the area of Ribblehead, Craven in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. The station is located at the southern end of the famous Ribblehead Viaduct, which spans a length of over Batty Moss. History The station was designed by Midland Railway architect, John Holloway Sanders. It opened on 4 December 1876 as ''Batty Green'', but was later renamed ''Ribblehead'' on 1 May 1877. It was closed, along with the other smaller stations on the line, on 4 May 1970. It was reopened on 16 July 1986 by British Rail with only one platform (southbound) in place. The northbound platform had been demolished after the station's closure in May 1970, in order to allow the construction of transfer sidings for a nearby quarry. Ribblehead
Ribblehead is the area of moorland at the head of the River Ribble in the area known as Ribblesdale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, England. Ribblehead is most notable for Ribblehead railway station and Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway. It is in North Yorkshire with its nearest town being Ingleton. It has some accommodation catering mainly for hikers and a small local population. It is also a point on the Dales Way and Yorkshire Three Peaks walks, in sight of major local peaks including Ingleborough and Whernside. Chirk
Chirk ( cy, Y Waun) is a town and community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales, south of Wrexham, between it and Oswestry. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 4,468. Wensleydale
Wensleydale is the dale or upper valley of the River Ure on the east side of the Pennines, one of the Yorkshire Dales in North Yorkshire, England. It is one of only a few Yorkshire Dales not currently named after its principal river, but the older name, Yoredale, can still be seen on some maps and as the Yoredale Series of geological strata. The dale takes its name from the village of Wensley, once its market town. The valley is famous for its cheese, with the main commercial production at Hawes. Hawes
Hawes is a market town and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England, at the head of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales, and historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The River Ure north of the town is a tourist attraction in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The population in 2011 was 887. The parish of Hawes also includes the neighbouring hamlet of Gayle. DalesRail
DalesRail is a railway passenger service operated for tourism in the summer months across Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire, England. The service routinely uses the current freight-only line between Clitheroe and Hellifield, offering the opportunity to travel on a line rarely used by passenger trains. The trains then also traverse the full length of the Settle & Carlisle line. The ''DalesRail'' brand has also been used on the Wensleydale Line in the 1970s and 1980s, before that line reopened as a heritage railway. DalesRail customers were part of the campaign to save the Settle–Carlisle line from closure, and initially used stations that were closed to passengers in 1970. Carlisle Railway Station
Carlisle railway station, or Carlisle Citadel, is a Grade II* listed railway station serving the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England. It is on the West Coast Main Line, south-east of and north north-west of . It is the northern terminus of the Settle and Carlisle Line, a continuation of the Midland Main Line from , and . It was formerly the southern terminus of the partially-closed Waverley Route from Edinburgh. It is so named because it is adjacent to Carlisle Citadel, a former medieval fortress.
