Riah Abu El-Assal
Riah Hanna Abu El-Assal ( ar, رياح حنا أبو العسل, , he, ריאח אבו אלעסל; born 6 November 1937 in Nazareth) is an Israeli Palestinian Anglican bishop, who was the Bishop in Jerusalem from 1997 to 2007. History Abu El-Assal graduated from Nazareth Baptist school where he also taught. While at Nazareth he was a member of the PLP, the Progressive List for Peace – a joint Jewish-Arab political party which, while existing only for eight years (1984–1992) is considered to have broken many previously sacrosanct taboos and profoundly influenced subsequent Israeli politics. During his time in Nazareth he was vicar of Christ Church, Nazareth. In 1997, Abu El-Assal became the thirteenth Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem and head of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East until his retirement on 31 March 2007 at the prescribed retirement age of 70 years, though he was only seven and a half months short of his 70th birthday. Episcopal Church In Jerusalem And The Middle East
The Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East is a province of the Anglican Communion. The primate of the church is called President Bishop and represents the Church at the international Anglican Communion Primates' Meetings. The Central Synod of the church is its deliberative and legislative organ. The province consists of three dioceses: * Diocese of Jerusalem — covering Israel, Palestinian territories, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, * Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf — covering Cyprus, the Arabian peninsula and Iraq, * Diocese of Iran. Faik Haddad
Faik Ibrahim Haddad ( ā'iq Ḥaddād b. 28 December 1914 Tulkarm; d. 23 January 2001 Amman) was the 11th bishop of Jerusalem, he was the first bishop of Arabic descent to head the diocese. He was also a Chaplain of the Order of Saint John. Background and education Haddad was born in Tulkarm city on 28 December 1914 into a Palestinian family that had been active in Anglican life in the area. He grew up in Tulkarm city, and was educated in his city schools, then he was educated at St. George's School, Jerusalem and the American University of Beirut. Early career Haddad was ordained deacon in 1939 and priested in 1940, both by the 7th bishop, Francis Brown. After a curacy at Acre he served at Jaffa, Amman and Nablus. Later career In 1971 he was appointed a Canon Residentiary at St. George's Cathedral, Jerusalem and served there until his consecration as Coadjutor Bishop of Jerusalem on 29 August 1974.
