Rhonda Thorne
Rhonda Thorne (born 6 February 1958, in Toowoomba, Queensland) (also known as Rhonda Clayton and Rhonda Shapland) is an Australian former World No. 1 squash player. She was one of the leading players on the international squash circuit in the late-1970s and early-1980s, and won the 1981 Women's World Open Squash Championship. Born Rhonda Shapland she married Ross Thorne, a notable squash player in 1978 and changed her name to Rhonda Thorne. In the 1981 World Open final in Toronto, Canada, Thorne beat fellow Australian player Vicki Cardwell 8-10, 9-4, 9-5, 7-9, 9-7 to become world champion. Vicki Cardwell
Vicki Cardwell BEM (née Hoffmann, born 21 April 1955, in Adelaide, South Australia) is a former World No. 1 squash player from Australia. She was one of the leading players on the international squash circuit from the late-1970s through to the mid-1990s. During her career, she won the World Open in 1983, and captured the British Open title four consecutive times in 1980-83. Since retiring from the top-level game, Cardwell has enjoyed continued success in seniors events. She won four World Masters Championships titles between 1987 and 1995. Cardwell has been inducted into the Australian Sport Hall of Fame and the Squash Australia Hall of Fame. The WSF World Team Squash Championships are an international squash competition organised by the World Squash Federation (WSF) and played between teams representing different nations. Countries enter teams of three or four players to represent them in the championships. In each round of the competition, teams face each other in a best-of-three singles matches contest. The World Squash Championships are squash events for men and women organised by the Professional Squash Association. The men's event was first held in 1976 in London, England and the women's was inaugurated in 1976 in Brisbane, Australia. Overview The British Open had for many years been generally considered to be the sport's effective world championship, and this continued to be the case until the World Open (now called World Championship) was established. The women's World Championship was held once every two years until the early 1990s, when it became an annual event. The men's event has been held every year since 1976, except for a two-year gap in 2000 and 2001 when it was not held due primarily to difficulties in securing sponsorship. Ross Thorne (born 7 November 1957) is a former Australian professional squash player. Thorne was born on 7 November 1957 and lived in Queensland.
