Rex (band)
Rex is an American indie rock band formed in 1994 (though an early version of the band was formed in 1991). Rex was considered one of the most important and influential slowcore bands and released three albums and one EP on Southern Records, as well as a collaboration with Red Red Meat (under the name Loftus) on Perishable Records. Members included Doug Scharin (who was also a member of Codeine, HiM, and June of 44), Curtis Harvey ( Pullman), and Phil Spirito (Orso). Red Red Meat
Red Red Meat was a 1990s Chicago-area blues-influenced alternative rock band. After their break-up, frontman Tim Rutili went on to form Califone, for which many of Red Red Meat's former members, including percussionist Ben Massarella, often record and perform. Tim Hurley went on to form Sin Ropas. History In 1984, Tim Rutili moved from the suburb of Addison, IL to Chicago in order to attend film school, where he met bassist Glynis Johnson. Together with Ben Massarella, their first band, Friends of Betty, attracted a reasonable following. The 1988 studio album ''Blind Faith II'' included drummer John Rowan. It was not much of a success. With new recruit Glenn Girard they renamed the band Red Red Meat. The band's name possibly came from Ben's truck washing business which cleaned meat carrying trucks on their way out of Chicago. Pullman is an American, studio-only, folk and predominantly acoustic rock supergroup, formed in Chicago by Ken Brown, Curtis Harvey, Chris Brokaw, and Doug McCombs in the late 1990s. HiM is a dub influenced post-rock group formed in 1995 by Doug Scharin, drummer for the bands Codeine, Rex and June of 44. Their first album, ''Egg'', was their most dub-based effort. Each successive album has gone more in a quasi- world music direction. After some recording for ''Crooklyn Dub Consortium'' and Wordsound, ''Interpretive Belief System'', HiM settled on a lineup of Scharin with Bundy K. Brown, Rob Mazurek and Jeff Parker, members or occasional members of Tortoise and Isotope 217. Their first album was the underground hit ''Sworn Eyes'', produced by Doug Scharin. Codeine was an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in New York City. They released two full-length albums—''Frigid Stars LP'' in 1990 and ''The White Birch'' in 1994. The band broke up in 1994 shortly after the release of ''The White Birch'', but reunited to play a handful of shows in 2012. The band will be reuniting for a show in Los Angeles in 2023. Slowcore is a subgenre of alternative rock and indie rock. The music of slowcore artists is generally characterized by bleak lyrics, downbeat melodies, slower tempos and minimalist arrangements. Slowcore is often used interchangeably with the term sadcore. Doug Scharin
Douglas Arthur Scharin is an American drummer and percussionist. He has served as a member of a multitude of bands, including Codeine, Rex, HiM, Enablers, June of 44, Loftus and Mice Parade. He currently resides in San Diego, California. Biography Douglas Arthur Scharin was born and grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. As a teenager, he became interested in music while listening to his mother's boyfriend perform drums in his band Son. Bassist and composer Bill Laswell was also a member of the band and taught Scharin to play drums and bass. In 1994, Scharin received attention for his drumming after he joined the slowcore group Codeine for their second album ''The White Birch''. After Codeine disbanded, Scharin founded Rex and HiM in 1995. In 2006, Scharin started an experimental music project named Activities of Dust.
