Reta Cowley
Reta Cowley (born Reta Madeline Summers; 1 April 1910 – 23 November 2004) was a Canadian painter. She is known for her watercolors of the prairie country around Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which capture the unique qualities of space and light. Life Reta Madeline Summers was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on 1 April 1910. She grew up near Truax and in Yorkton. She attended the Saskatoon Normal School and graduated with a teacher's certificate in 1930. During the Great Depression she taught in rural schools in Saskatchewan. From 1938 to 1946 she held a permanent teaching position in Yorkton. In 1937 Reta attended the Emma Lake Artists' Workshops of the University of Saskatchewan. They had been founded in 1936 by Augustus Kenderdine. She returned to the Emma Lake school in 1938, 1939 and 1940. Moose Jaw
Moose Jaw is the fourth largest city in Saskatchewan, Canada. Lying on the Moose Jaw River in the south-central part of the province, it is situated on the Trans-Canada Highway, west of Regina. Residents of Moose Jaw are known as Moose Javians. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Moose Jaw No. 161. Eli Bornstein
Eli Bornstein (born December 28, 1922) is an American-born Canadian artist and teacher who has spent most of his life in Saskatchewan, Canada. He is known for his three-dimensional reliefs. Early years Eli Bornstein was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 28, 1922. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute for a short period in 1943, then went to the Milwaukee State Teachers' College, graduating with a BSc in 1945. From 1943 to 1947 he was a teacher at the Milwaukee Art Institute. In 1949 Bornstein taught design at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Career In 1950 Bornstein became head of the newly established Department of Fine Arts at the University of Saskatchewan. During his summer breaks he studied in Paris, France at the Académie de Montmartre of Fernand Léger in 1951 and at the Académie Julian in 1952. Paul Klee
Paul Klee (; 18 December 1879 – 29 June 1940) was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Clement Greenberg () (January 16, 1909 – May 7, 1994), occasionally writing under the pseudonym K. Hardesh, was an American essayist known mainly as an art critic closely associated with American modern art of the mid-20th century and a formalist aesthetician. He is best remembered for his association with the art movement abstract expressionism and the painter Jackson Pollock. David Milne (artist)
David Milne (January 8, 1882 – December 26, 1953) was a Canadian painter, printmaker, and writer. Biography David Milne was born near Paisley in 1882. He was the last of 10 children born to Scottish immigrant parents. His early education was in Paisley, followed by high school in Walkerton; he performed well in school and soon after graduation began teaching in a country school near Paisley. During 1902 and 1903 he studied art through correspondence, eventually deciding to move to New York City in 1903 at the age of 21. In New York, he spent two years (and a third year of night school) studying at the Art Students League. He had five paintings exhibited in the Armory Show of 1913, and he was also represented by the N. E. Montross Gallery (same as 'The Eight' or Ashcan School artists). John Marin
John Marin (December 23, 1870 – October 2, 1953) was an early American modernist artist. He is known for his abstract landscapes and watercolors. Biography Marin was born in Rutherford, New Jersey. His mother died nine days after his birth, and he was raised by two aunts in Weehawken, New Jersey.. He attended the Stevens Institute of Technology for a year, and tried unsuccessfully to become an architect.
