Restigouche-la-Vallée
Restigouche-La-Vallée was a provincial electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada. It was created in 2006 as a result of a merger of the old district of Madawaska-la-Vallée with the district of Restigouche West, less small portions on the extreme edges of both districts. History The district was first used in the 2006 provincial general election and featured a battle of incumbents. Percy Mockler, the Progressive Conservative MLA from Madawaska-la-Vallée defeated Burt Paulin, the Liberal MLA from Restigouche West. On December 18, 2008, Percy Mockler was appointed to the Senate of Canada on the advice of Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper. As a result, a by-election was to be called no later than May 2009. New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 2013
The 2013 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was undertaken through the process set out in the ''Electoral Boundaries and Representation Act'' of New Brunswick, Canada. The legislation establishes a statutory requirement for redistribution of electoral districts after every second New Brunswick general election. A commission was struck to draw 49 electoral districts, a decrease from 55 districts, which will first be used in the 2014 provincial election. The 49 boundaries will have to be within the range of 95% to 105% of the 1/49th of the number of registered voters in the province except in "extraordinary circumstances". Under the legislation, the commission will be chaired by one anglophone and one francophone and consist of 3 to 5 other commissioners, all of whom must be New Brunswick residents. Madawaska-la-Vallée
Madawaska-la-Vallée was a provincial electoral district which elected one member to the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of New Brunswick, Canada. It was created in the 1994 redrawing of electoral boundaries and dissolved in 2006. It was used in the 1995, 1999 and 2003 elections. Its only MLA was Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick representation Percy Mockler, now a member of the Senate of Canada. New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 2006
The 2006 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was undertaken as a result of legislation introduced by Bernard Lord, the Premier of New Brunswick, Canada, on June 9, 2005. The legislation establishes a statutory requirement for redistribution of electoral districts after every decennial Canadian census. The redistribution process set out in the legislation took approximately six months to complete, and was overseen by an independent commission. The bill introduced by the government would have required that 55 ridings be maintained with populations varying between 75% and 110% of 1/55 of the provincial population. The Opposition Liberals expressed a desire for the commission to have greater flexibility either in the variance of the average population or in the number of districts. Restigouche West
Restigouche West (french: Restigouche-Ouest) is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. It was used from 1974 through 2003, when it was split between the ridings of Restigouche-La-Vallée and Campbellton-Restigouche Centre. The riding was re-established in the 2013 electoral redistribution from parts of Dalhousie-Restigouche East, Restigouche-La-Vallée and Campbellton-Restigouche Centre and will be contested again beginning in the 2014 general election. This riding was created in the 1973 redistribution when New Brunswick moved to single member districts from Bloc voting. Prior to its creation, it had been part of the Restigouche County district which returned three members. Percy Mockler
Percy Paul Mockler (born April 14, 1949 in St. Leonard, New Brunswick) is a Canadian politician serving as a Canadian Senator from New Brunswick since 2009. A member of the Conservative Party of Canada, Mockler previously served two non-consecutive stints in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1982 to 1987, and again from 1993 to 2008. Biography He studied at the University of Moncton where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology and a Master of Business Administration degree. A member of the Progressive Conservative Party, was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the 1982 election. After his election defeat in 1987, Mockler worked as an organizer for the federal Progressive Conservatives in the 1988 federal election and worked for the Brian Mulroney administration in Ottawa until its dying days in 1993. Burt Paulin
Burt Paulin (born August 13, 1955) is a Canadian politician in New Brunswick. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Paulin's family moved to Saint-Jean-Baptiste-de-Restigouche when he was four months old. He married Carolle Mallais. Burt Paulin was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in 2003 to represent the electoral district of Restigouche West. In early 2006, electoral boundaries were redrawn and Paulin's district was merged with Madawaska-la-Vallée to form Restigouche-la-Vallée. Madawaska Les Lacs-Edmundston is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. The district was established in 1973 as Madawaska les Lacs when New Brunswick moved from a system of bloc voting to the first past the post electoral system. It had previously been a part of the Madawaska County electoral district which returned three members. It the 1994 electoral redistribution, it added parts of the old district of Madawaska Centre and it underwent only very minor boundary changes in 2006. In 2013, it added more of the city of Edmundston to its boundaries and was renamed. It was formerly one of the safest francophone seats in New Brunswick for the Progressive Conservatives. Jeannot Volpé
Jeannot Volpé (born June 28, 1950) is a Canadian politician in the Province of New Brunswick. Born in Saint-Jacques, New Brunswick, Volpé graduated from the University of Moncton in 1973 with a Bachelor of Physical Education degree and taught school until 1980. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in 1995 and re-elected in 1999, 2003 and 2006. Shawn Michael Graham (born February 22, 1968) is a Canadian politician, who served as the 31st premier of New Brunswick from 2006 to 2010. He was elected leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Party in 2002 and became premier after his party captured a majority of seats in the 2006 election.
