The Rennsteiglauf (full name GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf) is a trail running event on the Rennsteig path in the Thuringian Forest. The longest course is an ultramarathon currently 72.7 km from Eisenach to Schmiedefeld and part of the European Ultramarathon Cup. Other competitions are a marathon (42.195 km) from Neuhaus am Rennweg to Schmiedefeld, a half marathon from Oberhof, Germany, Oberhof to Schmiedefeld, short Cross country running, cross country races for people with mental retardation, intellectual disabilities and several hiking courses from 10 to 50 km. Since 1973, the race has taken place annually in May. It used to be the biggest popular sport event in East Germany, and is still one of the biggest ultramarathons in Europe, attracting more than 10,000 participants, including those for other distances. The () is a ridge walk as well as an historical boundary path in the Thuringian Forest, Thuringian Highland and Franconian Forest in Central Germany. The long-distance trail runs for about from and the valley in the northwest to and the river in the southeast. The is also the watershed between the river systems of the , Elbe and Rhine. The catchment areas of all three river systems meet at the ("Three Rivers Rock") near . Route The runs along the ridge of the Thuringian Central Uplands (') from northwest to southeast mostly at heights of around 500 to 970 metres. The European Ultramarathon Cup, was an annual cup event covering some of the biggest Ultramarathon races in Europe from 1992 until 2019. League For a league score, for each runner the three best races during a calendar year were scored. The weighting factor was calculated based on the best finishing times during the previous year and is normalized on the finishing time of the 100 km Del Passatore. Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths, also called Guts Muth or Gutsmuths (9 August 1759 – 21 May 1839), was a teacher and educator in Germany, and is especially known for his role in the development of physical education. He is thought of as the "grandfather of gymnastics" – the "father" being Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. GutsMuths introduced systematic physical exercise into the school curriculum, and he developed the basic principles of artistic gymnastics. Biography He was born in Quedlinburg. He attended the University of Halle from 1778 to 1782, where he studied pedagogy. Sometime after 1785 while a private tutor in Schnepfenthal (where he remained his entire life) he was appointed as a teacher, and it was there he taught gymnastics supervised by Salzmann.
