Rena Rama
Rena Rama was a Swedish jazz band formed in 1971, noted for mixing jazz, unusual time signatures, and African and Asian folk themes. Its original personnel included Lennart Åberg (saxophone, flute), Bobo Stenson (piano), Palle Danielsson (bass), and Bengt Berger (drums). Both Stenson and Åberg previously had worked with Red Mitchell, and Danielsson with Steve Kuhn. Berger had previously studied percussion in India. Stenson had already recorded his first trio LP titled ''Underwear'' (ECM). Recordings with the original lineup include the LP ''Rena Rama'' on the Caprice label, recorded in Stockholm in 1973. ECM Records
ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) is an independent record label founded by Karl Egger, Manfred Eicher and Manfred Scheffner in Munich in 1969. While ECM is best known for jazz music, the label has released a variety of recordings, and ECM's artists often refuse to acknowledge boundaries between genres. ECM's motto is "the most beautiful sound next to silence", taken from a 1971 review of ECM releases in ''Coda'', a Canadian jazz magazine. ECM has been distributed in the U.S. by Warner Bros. Records, PolyGram Records, BMG, and, since 1999, Universal Music, the successor of PolyGram, worldwide. Lennart Åberg
Lennart Åberg (26 February 1942 – 30 September 2021) was a Swedish jazz saxophonist and composer. In 1972, he founded Rena Rama, a Swedish jazz fusion group. He also taught jazz history at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm. He was a member of composer George Russell's ensemble in the 1980s along with Jon Christensen, Arild Andersen, and Jan Garbarek, appearing on '' The Essence of George Russell'' (Soul Note 1983). In 2002, he received the Djangodor in the Contemporary Star of Jazz category. In addition to jazz, Aberg also worked in musical styles from India, Africa, and Eastern Europe, as well as contemporary music. Bobo Stenson
Bobo Stenson (born Bo Gustav Stenson; 4 August 1944) is a Swedish jazz pianist. The Bobo Stenson Trio, formed in collaboration with Anders Jormin (bass) and Jon Fält (drums), has been in existence for four decades. Career Stenson studied with Werner Wolf for 15 years, starting at the age of 8. In 1963, Stenson stepped up from the local scene in Västerås to begin playing frequently in Stockholm, where he accompanied a long line of visiting American players including Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz and Gary Burton. He also worked closely with Don Cherry from the beginning of the trumpeter's residency in Scandinavia. The 1970s was an intensive period for Stenson, playing in many groups, amongst them the long-standing band Rena Rama with Palle Danielsson, and a trio with Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen; later also with Jan Garbarek. In 1988, he joined the Charles Lloyd quartet and since 1996 has appeared at major jazz festivals with Tomasz Stańko's septet/sextet. Discography As ... Palle Danielsson
Nils Paul "Palle" Danielsson (born 15 October 1946) is a Swedish jazz double bassist born in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1974 to 1979, he was a member of Keith Jarrett's quartet. He is the brother of pianist Monica Dominique. Career Danielsson's childhood was an especially musical one; his first instrument was the harmonica, which he started playing at the age of two. By age eight he was playing violin, which he continued to play and study for about five years. Around this time he became interested in jazz music and started to play double bass. By the time he was fifteen, Danielsson was playing professionally. Having studied at the Stockholm Royal Academy of Music (1962–1966), he began to play with Scandinavian musicians such as Eje Thelin, Bobo Stenson, and Jan Garbarek and took up international collaborations, e.g. with Lee Konitz and Steve Kuhn. Leroy James Lowe (born May 22, 1963) is a Canadian biologist best known for his “Low Dose Theory of Carcinogenesis”, the “Broad-spectrum approach to Cancer Therapy”, and for his efforts to define “The Human Affectome” in the field of neuroscience. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime.
