Reinoud I Van Brederode
Reinoud I van Brederode (English: Raynald) (Santpoort, 1336–1390) was the 6th lord of Brederode. Life He was a son of Dirk III van Brederode and Beatrix van Heinsberg van Valkenberg. In 1358 Reinoud was appointed bailiff of Kennemerland by Albert I, count of Holland. In the same year an assassination attempt was made on him at Castricumerzand. On 11 November 1377 he succeeded his father as lord of Brederode. Reinoud supported Machteld of Guelders in her struggle for the county of Guelders from 1371 to 1379. Family Reinoud married in 1366 with Jolanda van Gennep van der Eem, a daughter of Jan II van Gennep. They had at least four children: *Dirk or Diederik (1370–1415), who decided to enter a monastic life in 1390, upon which his titles went to his brothers. Walraven I Van Brederode
Walraven I van Brederode (Santpoort, ca.1370/73 – Gorinchem, 1 December 1417) was Burgrave of Stavoren from 1400 to 1401, lord of van Brederode, Brederode from 1402 to 1417, and Stadtholder of County of Holland, Holland from 1416 to 1417. Life Walraven was the son of Reinoud I van Brederode and Jolanda van Gennep. In 1396 Walraven took part in the campaigns against the Friesland, West Frisians, under the command of Albert I, Duke of Bavaria, Albert of Bavaria. Walraven was made Burgrave of Stavoren on 8 September 1400, but he kept the function for only a short time before relinquishing it again. In 1402 the lordship of Brederode was turned over to him by his older brother, Jan I van Brederode, who had decided to enter a monastic life in the monastery at Zelheim. The Lords of Van Brederode (''Heeren van Brederode'') were a noble family from Holland who played an important role during the Middle Ages and the Early modern period. The family had a high noble rank and hold the titles ''Count of Brederode'', Count of Gennep, and furthermore they ruled the souverain Lordship of Vianen, the Viscountship of Utrecht among other feudal titles. History The Lords of Brederode descendant from the Counts of Holland and the powerful Van Teylingen family (see Slot Teylingen, about halfway between Haarlem and Leiden). Dirk I van Brederode, also called ''Dirk van Teylingen'', built the Brederode castle. The earliest documented members appear in the 13th century in the region of Santpoort, at Castle Brederode. Johannes A Leydis
Johannes a Leydis or Jan Gerbrandszoon van Leiden was a Dutch chronicler from the 15th century. A Leydis died in 1504. Life Not much is known with certainty about Johannes a Leydis' life. In all likelihood he came from a family of poorters (a special type of citizenship) from Leiden. He entered the carmelite monastery in Haarlem before 1455. In 1476 he was named prior of the monastery, but in 1479 we find him as prior of the monastery at Woudsend in Friesland. It seems that, during the struggles between the Vetkopers and Schieringers, discipline had become lax in the monastery. A Leydis attempted to reform the monastery, but apparently encountered so much resistance to his reforms that he was forced to leave in 1480. From sources we know that A Leydis was back in the monastery in Haarlem in 1495, filling the function of subprior. A Leydis died in 1504 in Haarlem. Hook And Cod Wars
The Hook and Cod wars ( nl, Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten) comprise a series of wars and battles in the County of Holland between 1350 and 1490. Most of these wars were fought over the title of count of Holland, but some have argued that the underlying reason was because of the power struggle of the bourgeois in the cities against the ruling nobility. The Cod faction generally consisted of the more progressive cities of Holland. The Hook faction consisted for a large part of the conservative noblemen. The origin of the name "Cod" is uncertain, but is most likely a case of reappropriation. Perhaps it derives from the arms of Bavaria, that look like the scales of a fish. The ''Hook'' refers to the hooked stick that is used to catch cod. Another possible explanation is that as a cod grows it tends to eat more, growing even bigger and eating even more, thus encapsulating how the noblemen perhaps saw the expanding middle classes of the time. William Van Brederode (admiral)
Willem van Brederode (1380 – France 1451) was an admiral-captain and an important partisan of the Hook faction during the Hook and Cod wars. He was the son of Reinoud I van Brederode and Jolanda van Gennep van der Eem. William was knighted in 1402 by William VI, count of Holland. William was strongly aligned with the Hook faction and supported Jacqueline of Bavaria in er claims on the inheritance of Holland and Zeeland, and he was present at the siege of Haarlem as commander of the fleet situated along the Spaarne river. He lost the naval battle of Wieringen, but managed to secure his freedom through his noble status. He again supported Jacqueline during the siege of Gouda, but this battle was also lost. William died at the age of 71 in France. William van Brederode married Margaretha van Merwede and Stein, but their marriage remained childless. Jan I Van Brederode
Jan van Brederode ( Santpoort, 1370/1372 – Azincourt, 25 October 1415) was lord of Brederode and during his life lay brother and soldier. Life Jan was the son of Reinoud I van Brederode and Jolanda van Gennep. In 1390 he succeeded his father as the 7th lord of Brederode. Jan had an elder brother named Dirk or Diederik, who had chosen for a life in a monastery, causing all inheritance to go to Jan instead. In 1396 he campaigned against the rebellious West-Frisians together with Albert I, Duke of Bavaria, and in 1398 he made a pilgrimage to Ireland to visit the St. Patricks Fire. After his pilgrimage Jan invested a lot of money in founding new chapels and monasteries. In 1393 he married Johanna van Abcoude. After a childless marriage, they both decided to enter a monastery in 1402. The heritage of Brederode, which included large debts, was given to Jan's younger brother Walraven I van Brederode.
