Referee (boxing)
The referee in boxing is the individual charged with enforcing the rules of that sport during a match. The role of the referee The referee has the following roles: *Gives instructions to both boxers before the fight *Determines when to start or stop a count when a fighter is down *Determines when a foul is so egregious that a warning should be given or points taken away *Signals when the round is over *Determines when one fighter's health will be endangered by more blows, and thus, stops the fight. In the past, referees were involved in judging the fight. However, that role has been progressively replaced by a panel of judges, except for domestic fights in some countries. Attire Normally, a white or blue Oxford shirt is worn, as well as black slacks, black leather shoes and a black bow tie. Latex gloves are sometimes worn for sanitary reasons. Steve Smoger (August 15, 1950 – December 19, 2022) was an American boxing referee from Atlantic City, New Jersey. He refereed more than 200 title bouts, and was one of the more well-traveled of his profession, holding the distinction of officiating in more states and countries than any other boxing referee in the history of the sport. Smoger also officiated kickboxing matches. Background Raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Smoger graduated from Atlantic City High School. He attended Pennsylvania State University and the George Washington University Law School. Appointed in 1980, Smoger was the first full-time city prosecutor in the history of Atlantic City, serving in that position until 1992, when he was appointed to the bench of the Atlantic County Municipal Court. Frank Capcino (February 7, 1929 – June 8, 2015), better known by his ring name Frank Cappuccino, was a boxing referee best known for having officiated over some of the most famous boxing matches in history. Career Cappuccino was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the neighborhood known as Kensington. Both he and his brother Vito (Vic) were accomplished boxers. Fighting as a lightweight (130 lb. class), Cappuccino fought more than 130 amateur bouts in the early 1950s. He participated in the Pennsylvania state championships and was a finalist in both the Diamond Belt and Golden Glove Tournaments. Leaving the amateur ranks in 1955, Cappuccino turned professional under the management of George Katz. Though undefeated in six professional matches, Cappuccino retired early. Charles Eyton (24 June 1871 – 2 July 1941) was an actor-producer who became general manager of Famous Players-Lasky Corporation (a Paramount Pictures subsidiary) during the silent film era. Eddie Cotton, Jr. (June 15, 1926 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, United States — April 17, 2020 in Seattle) was a former boxer. Cotton was a resident of Seattle, Washington until his death on following a second liver transplant. Career Eddie Cotton was a light heavyweight contender from the late 1950s until his retirement in the late 1960s. He was known as a good defensive fighter, although not very exciting. He was also prone to getting cut in fights. His style was undoubtedly influenced by his original trainer who had boxed in an almost identical manner. George Curtis (April 9, 1925 – May 13, 2004) was a professional boxer, referee and business owner who was licensed to officiate bouts in Las Vegas, Nevada. Curtis, who had an undistinguished career as a boxer, lived in Las Vegas for thirty years. There, he established the Curtis Construction Company, which he owned until May 2003. As a boxing referee, Curtis was known for taking boxer's safety into consideration first. He refereed a number of world title fights, and he worked a number of non-title fights over the years. Richard Steele (born January 26, 1944) is an American retired Referee (boxing), boxing referee who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. A former member of the United States Marine Corps, Steele was a teammate of future world Heavyweight champion Ken Norton in the Marines. He began his career as an amateur boxer while with the Marines, compiling a record of 12 wins and 3 losses before launching a professional career. Steele was All Marines in 1963-64 and participated in the 1964 Olympic Trials, and was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps Boxing Hall of Fame in 2017.
