Red Snapper (band)
Red Snapper are a British instrumental band founded in London in 1993 by Ali Friend (double bass), Richard Thair (drums), and David Ayers (guitar). The three core members are also joined by various guest musicians and vocalists on different records. Since the 2007 reunion Tom Challenger (saxophone) has also been a member of the band. According to music journalist Jason Ankeny of AllMusic, "the British acid jazz trio renotable for their pioneering synthesis of acoustic instruments and electronic textures". Career The band released three EPs on Flaw Recordings before signing to Warp Records for their debut album, ''Prince Blimey'' (1996). The band were a somewhat unusual feature of Warp Records' 1990s roster: in contrast to the studio-oriented IDM the record label primarily dealt in, the band had a live and organic sound: a smoky mixture of dub, jazz and all tempos of breakbeat from trip hop to drum and bass. Drum And Bass
Drum and bass (also written as drum & bass or drum'n'bass and commonly abbreviated as D&B, DnB, or D'n'B) is a genre of electronic dance music characterized by fast breakbeats (typically 165–185 beats per minute) with heavy bass and sub-bass lines, samples, and synthesizers. The genre grew out of the UK's rave scene in the 1990s. The popularity of drum and bass at its commercial peak ran parallel to several other UK dance styles. A major influence was the original Jamaican dub and reggae sound that influenced jungle's bass-heavy sound. Another feature of the style is the complex syncopation of the drum tracks' breakbeat. Clayhill
Clayhill was a British three-piece folk band comprising Ali Friend, Ted Barnes and vocalist Gavin Clark. They released their debut album ''Small Circle'' in 2004, and released two EPs and another LP, ''Mine at Last'' (2006). Throughout the summer of 2006 they toured with Mercury Music Prize winners Gomez and Beth Orton, as the support act on both her UK and US tours to promote ''Comfort of Strangers''. In 2004, they appeared in the special Christmas concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London as one of Aqualung's special guests. In the same year their song "Afterlight" was used in the soundtrack of acclaimed Shane Meadows thriller '' Dead Man's Shoes''. Beth Orton
Elizabeth Caroline Orton (born 14 December 1970) is an English musician, known for her "folktronica" sound, which mixes elements of folk and electronica. She was initially recognised for her collaborations with William Orbit, Andrew Weatherall, Red Snapper and the Chemical Brothers in the mid-1990s. Her UK/US first solo album, ''Trailer Park'', received much critical acclaim in 1996. Orton developed a devoted audience with the release of the BRIT Award-winning album ''Central Reservation'' (1999) and the 2002 UK top 10 album, '' Daybreaker''. Her 2006 album, ''Comfort of Strangers'', was followed by a break during which Orton gave birth to her daughter and collaborated with the British guitarist Bert Jansch. Byron Wallen (born July 1969) is a British jazz trumpeter, composer and educator. He was described by ''Jazzwise'' as "one of the most innovative, exciting and original trumpet players alive". As characterised by ''All About Jazz'', "He does not fit into any pigeonhole, however, and is also something of a renaissance man: he has long been involved in cognitive psychology and also travels widely, spending extended periods in South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Morocco, Indonesia and Belize (his parents' homeland)." Jungle is a genre of dance music that developed out of the UK rave scene and sound system culture in the 1990s. The Prodigy
The Prodigy are an English electronic dance music band formed in Braintree, Essex, in 1990 by producer, keyboard player and songwriter Liam Howlett. The original line-up also featured dancer and singer Keith Flint and dancer and occasional live keyboard player Leeroy Thornhill, dancer Sharky and MC and vocalist Maxim. They were pioneers of the breakbeat-influenced genre big beat, and achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s.
