Recognition Of Same-sex Unions In Lithuania
Lithuania does not recognise same-sex marriages or civil unions. A bill to grant same-sex couples some limited legal rights and benefits is pending in the Seimas. Civil partnerships Background In 2011, the Constitutional Court of Lithuania ruled that the family does not derive exclusively from marriage, opening the possibility for partnerships or other forms of legal recognition to be introduced to same-sex couples. On 25 March 2015, nine MPs from the Social Democratic Party and the Liberal Movement introduced a civil partnership bill to the Seimas. Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius expressed his opposition to the bill. Freedom Party (Lithuania)
The Freedom Party ( lt, Laisvės partija) is a political party in Lithuania, founded on 1 June 2019 and led by former Liberal Movement member Aušrinė Armonaitė. History The party has its roots in Vilnius mayor Remigijus Šimašius's list "For Vilnius, which we are proud of!", which won the Lithuanian capital's council and mayoral election. In November 2018 Aušrinė Armonaitė announced intentions to found a new party. By the summer and autumn of 2019, the party established its branches in cities and their surrounding municipalities. The right to property, or the right to own property (cf. ownership) is often classified as a human right for natural persons regarding their possessions. Naglis Puteikis (born 2 September 1964) is a Lithuanian politician and member of the Seimas. Biography Naglis Puteikis was born on 2 September 1964 in Vilnius. In 1984, he graduated from the Faculty of History at Vilnius University and worked with preservation of historical heritage. Puteikis headed the Inspectorate of Cultural Heritage and, later, the Department for Protection of Cultural Valuables. Puteikis joined Homeland Union in 1996. In 1997, he briefly served on the Seventh Seimas, having been elected through the party's electoral list in 1996, but not initially taking his seat in the parliament. Gitanas Nausėda (born 19 May 1964) is a Lithuanian economist, politician and banker who is serving as the ninth and incumbent President of Lithuania since 2019. Ingrida Šimonytė (; born 15 November 1974) is a Lithuanian politician and economist who is the Prime Minister of Lithuania since 11 December 2020. Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis (born 9 August 1951) is WHO Special Envoy for the European region, the former European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, a heart surgeon, a co-signatory to the 1990 Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania. 2019 Lithuanian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Lithuania on 12 May 2019, with a second round held on 26 May 2019. Due to a constitutional limit of two terms in office, incumbent president Dalia Grybauskaitė was unable to run, having won the 2009 and 2014 elections. As no candidate obtained 50% of the vote in the first round, a second round was held between the top two candidates, Ingrida Šimonytė and Gitanas Nausėda. Nausėda was elected with 67% of the vote and was inaugurated as President of Lithuania on 12 July. Electoral system The elections were held using the two-round system. To win in the first round, a candidate required an absolute majority of the vote and either voter turnout to be above 50% or for their vote share to be equivalent to at least one-third of the number of registered voters.
