Rebecca Vassarotti
Rebecca Vassarotti (born 1972) is a member of parliament in the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly representing the ACT Greens. Vassarotti was born and raised in Canberra. Her mother was a teacher and is an advocate for public schooling. Vassarotti spent ten years with the YWCA in Canberra, including as executive director. She worked as a consultant in the not for profit sector, and was director on the board of numerous companies. She was a finalist for the ACT Australian of the Year. She is also an advocate for a reduction in the access to Slot machine, poker machines and is the Greens spokesperson on that issue. At the 2020 Australian Capital Territory general election Vassarotti won one of the five seats in Kurrajong electorate, Kurrajong, taking the seat from the Liberals' Candice Burch. ACT Greens
The ACT Greens is a green political party located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and a member of the federation of the Australian Greens. Both parties were formed in 1992, three years after the ACT achieved self-government in 1989. Since its formation the ACT Greens has had a significant presence in the ACT Legislative Assembly, having formed minority or coalition governments with the ACT Labor Party since 2008. Kurrajong Electorate
The Kurrajong electorate is one of the five electorates for the unicameral 25-member Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. It elected five members at the 2016 ACT election. History Kurrajong was created in 2016, when the five-electorate, 25-member Hare-Clark electoral system was first introduced for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Legislative Assembly, replacing the previous three-electorate, 17-member system. Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory (known in short as the ACT Legislative Assembly) is the unicameral legislature of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It sits in the Legislative Assembly Building on Civic Square, close to the centre of the city of Canberra. Creation The Assembly was created by four acts of the Commonwealth Parliament in 1988, including the Australian Capital Territory (Self-Government) Act 1988. The first election was held on 4 March 1989 and the assembly first sat on 11 May that year. Until this point, the ACT had been directly administered by the Commonwealth Government. Andrew Barr
Andrew James Barr (born 29 April 1973) is an Australian politician who has been serving as the 7th Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory since 2014. He has been an Australian Labor Party member in the ACT Legislative Assembly since 2006, after being elected on a countback to replace former Treasurer Ted Quinlan, who resigned mid-term. Barr was immediately promoted to Cabinet upon his election. On 11 December 2014 he was elected as Chief Minister after his predecessor, Katy Gallagher, resigned and announced her intention to run for the Senate. In addition to being Chief Minister, he holds the portfolios of Treasurer, Social Inclusion and Equality, Tourism and Special Events, and Trade, Industry and Investment. 2020 Australian Capital Territory General Election
The 2020 Australian Capital Territory general election was held between 28 September and 17 October 2020 to elect all 25 members of the unicameral ACT Legislative Assembly. The incumbent Labor/ Greens coalition government, led by Chief Minister Andrew Barr, defeated the opposition Liberal Party. On the night of the election Barr claimed victory and confirmed Labor would again seek to enter into an arrangement with the Greens to form government, whilst Liberal leader Alistair Coe conceded the election and acknowledged the party would retain opposition status in the Assembly. The result meant that the Labor Party, which had been in office for 19 years at this election, won a sixth consecutive term of government in the Territory. Candice Burch (born 26 August 1988) is an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party of Australia (Australian Capital Territory Division), Liberal member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. Candice Burch is not to be confused with nor is biologically related to Joy Burch, who is another member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly, ACT Legislative Assembly.
