Reading Town Regatta
Reading Town Regatta is an annual rowing regatta that takes place at the town of Reading in Berkshire on the River Thames in southern England. It is held near the Thames Valley Park business park on the south side of the river. A more local Thames Valley Park Regatta takes place at the same location. The course length for Reading Town Regatta is 800m with the Thames Valley Park Regatta length being 500m. The Reading Working Men’s Regatta was established in 1877. It was promoted by the Mayor and Corporation of Reading, receiving Royal patronage in 1896. The present title of the event was adopted in 1966. The event is normally held in June each year. The regatta can be a stepping-stone for rowing crews to the Henley Royal Regatta, held nearby at Henley-on-Thames each July. Some crew members go on to be selected to row at Great Britain national level. Reading is home to a number of professional sports teams and various amateur sports clubs. Football Reading is the home of Reading Football Club, an association football club nicknamed ''The Royals'', formed in 1871. Formerly based at Elm Park, the club plays at the 24,161 capacity Madejski Stadium, named after chairman Sir John Madejski. After winning the 2005–06 Football League Championship with a record of 106 points, Reading F.C. spent two seasons in the Premier League before being relegated to The Championship. During their Premier League first season, they fractionally missed-out on UEFA Cup qualification. Sonning Regatta
Sonning Regatta is the regatta of the village of Sonning in Berkshire and the hamlet of Sonning Eye in Oxfordshire, England, on the north and south banks of the River Thames.Perkins (1999), pages 139, 140, 145, 150, 154. It is a part of the Sonning Festival. History The original Regatta started in Victorian/Edwardian times but was interrupted by World War II. Reading Amateur Regatta is a rowing regatta, on the River Thames in England which takes place at Reading, Berkshire on the reach above Caversham Lock. The regatta takes place in June and attracts top crews from around the UK.British Rowing Almanac - All years Racing takes place on the 1500-metres downstream course that stretches from St Mary's Island until just short of Reading Rowing Club clubhouse.
