Ray Strauss
Raymond Bernard Strauss (4 November 1927 – 28 July 2013) was an Australian sportsman who played both cricket and field hockey at high levels. From Perth, Western Australia, Strauss attended Perth Modern School and later the University of Western Australia, playing for the university's hockey club. Twice named captain of the all-Australian universities side, he was captain of the side on several occasions, including when the team shared the 1952 Syme Cup with the University of Adelaide. Strauss represented Western Australia on various occasions from 1949 to 1955, and made his Test debut for the Australian national team in August 1954, against New Zealand (with cricket teammate Ian Dick captaining the side), though it is unclear if he played further matches for the national side. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. New Zealand Men's National Field Hockey Team
The New Zealand men's national field hockey team, also known as the Black Sticks Men, is the national team for men's field hockey of New Zealand, under the New Zealand Hockey Federation. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, they upset Australia to win gold, becoming the first non-Asian/European team to clinch the gold medal. 1960 English Cricket Season
1960 was the 61st season of County Championship cricket in England. The County Championship was won by Yorkshire for the second successive year. South Africa toured England, playing a five match Test series which England won 3–0. During the series there was a throwing controversy which saw umpire Frank Lee call South African fast bowler Geoff Griffin for throwing in the Lord's Test. This led to umpire Syd Buller repeatedly calling the Griffin for throwing in the following tour match. This had the effect of ending Griffin's Test career and of bringing to a head worldwide discontent about throwing and "dragging" that had caused controversy for the previous two years. Lindsay Kline
Lindsay Francis Kline (29 September 1934 – 2 October 2015) was an Australian cricketer. He played in 13 Test matches for Australia and 88 first-class matches between 1955/56 and 1961/62. He was a left-arm spin bowler, bowling left-arm unorthodox spin. Kline is probably best remembered for his involvement in the outcome of two Test matches of the 1960/61 West Indies tour of Australia. He was the batsman who faced the seventh ball of the last over off Wes Hall in the famous Tied Test between Australia and West Indies at the Gabba in Brisbane in 1960. He also partnered all-rounder Ken Mackay in a 109-minute last wicket stand in the Fourth Test of the same series at the Adelaide Oval which forced a remarkable draw. Victoria Cricket Team
The Victoria men’s cricket team is an Australian first-class men's cricket team based in Melbourne, Victoria. The men’s team, which first played in 1851, represents the state of Victoria in the Marsh Sheffield Shield first-class competition and the Marsh One Day Cup 50-over competition. It was known as the Victorian Bushrangers between 1995 and 2018, before dropping the Bushrangers nickname and electing to be known as simply Victoria in all cricket competitions. Victoria shares home matches between the Melbourne Cricket Ground in East Melbourne and the Junction Oval in St Kilda. South Australia Cricket Team
The South Australia cricket team, officially named the West End Redbacks, is an Australian men's professional first-class cricket team based in Adelaide, South Australia. The Redbacks play their home matches at Adelaide Oval and are the state cricket team for South Australia, representing the state in the Sheffield Shield competition and the limited overs Marsh One-Day Cup. Their Marsh One-Day Cup uniform features a red body with black sleeves. They are known as the West End Redbacks due to a sponsorship agreement with West End. Sheffield Shield
The Sheffield Shield (currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Marsh Sheffield Shield) is the domestic first-class cricket competition of Australia. The tournament is contested between teams from the six states of Australia. Sheffield Shield is named after Lord Sheffield. Prior to the Shield being established, a number of intercolonial matches were played. The Shield, donated by Lord Sheffield, was first contested during the 1892–93 season, between New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. Queensland was admitted for the 1926–27 season, Western Australia for the 1947–48 season, and Tasmania for the 1977–78 season. The competition is contested in a double- round-robin format, with each team playing every other team twice, i.e. home and away. Ronald Arthur Gaunt (26 February 1934 – 31 March 2012) was an Australian cricketer who played in three Test matches between 1958 and 1964. He was chiefly a fast bowler, who took 266 wickets in first-class cricket at an average of 26.85, playing first for Western Australia and then for Victoria. His opportunities to play for Australia were restricted by the presence of Alan Davidson, Garth McKenzie and Ian Meckiff in the team at that time, but he took the wicket of Dick Westcott in his first over in test cricket and in all he took 7 wickets for Australia at an average of 44.28. Des Hoare
Desmond Edward Hoare (born 19 October 1934) is a former Australian cricketer who played in one Test match in 1961. He also played Australian rules football for East Fremantle in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL). Life and career A tall fast bowler and useful lower-order batsman, Hoare played for Western Australia from 1955–56 to 1965–66. He was selected for the Fourth Test against the West Indies in 1960–61, replacing the injured Alan Davidson. He took the wickets of Conrad Hunte and Frank Worrell and made 35 in a ninth-wicket partnership of 85 with Richie Benaud in the drawn match. Davidson returned to the team for the Fifth Test. Hoare was not selected for the tour to England in 1961, and when the Australian touring team played Western Australia at the end of the 1960–61 season, he opened the batting for Western Australia and hit 133, his only century. Harry Price (cricketer)
Reuben Henry "Harry" Price (27 April 1922 – 26 February 1991) was an Australian cricketer who played for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield. Price was born in London in 1922, with his family emigrating to Australia a few years later, settling in Margaret River, Western Australia. One of his younger brothers, Wally Price, played football for , and represented Western Australia at football. Price, who usually opening the bowling, was a left-arm fast-medium bowler and one of Western Australia's best from the 1950s. He was at his peak in the 1950/51 Sheffield Shield season, when he took 24 wickets at 18.41, which was twice as many as the state's next best Charlie Puckett and equal fifth most by any bowler that summer.
