Rauland
Rauland is a former municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1860 until its dissolution in 1964. The area is now part of Vinje Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Raulandsgrend (also known as ''Rauland'') which is where Rauland Church is located. The municipality was a very mountainous, rural area, with about 90% of its area at elevations of above sea level or higher. History In 1860, the northern part of Vinje Municipality (population: 745) was merged with the Øyfjell area in Laardal Municipality (population: 243), together they formed the new municipality of Rauland with a total population of 988. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. On 1 January 1964, Rauland Municipality (population: 1,656) was merged with Vinje Municipality (population: 2,565) to form a new, larger Vinje Municipality. Raulandsgrend
Raulandsgrend or simply Rauland is a village in Vinje Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located in a mountainous area along the north shore of the lake Totak, about to the northwest of the village of Krossen. The lake Møsvatn lies about to the north and the vast Hardangervidda National Park lies about to the northwest. The village was once the administrative centre of the old Rauland Municipality which existed from 1860 until 1964. Attractions Raulandsgrend is a village that is its mountainous surroundings where tourists can partake in hiking, recreation, and skiing. It is the largest winter destination in Telemark with three ski resorts, 46 slopes, 16 lifts, and of cross-country skiing trails. Well-known snowboarding celebrity, Terje Håkonsen, started his career in Rauland. The University of South-Eastern Norway has a campus in Rauland. Rauland Church
Rauland Church ( no, Rauland kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Vinje Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Rauland on the shore of the lake Totak. It is one of the churches for the Rauland parish which is part of the Øvre Telemark prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in a cruciform design in 1803 using plans drawn up by the architect Jarand Rønjom. The church seats about people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1491, but the church was not built that year. The first church in Rauland was a wooden stave church that may have been built during the 13th century. By the late 1700s, the old church was in need of replacement. Vinje
Vinje is a municipality in Telemark in the county of Vestfold og Telemark in Norway. It is part of the traditional regions of Upper Telemark and Vest-Telemark. The administrative center of the municipality is the village of Åmot. Sveinung Svalastoga
Sveinung Bjørnson Svalastoga (1772–1809) was a Norwegian rose painter, poet and woodcarver. Biography Sveinung Bjørnson Svalastoga was born in the community of Vinje in Rauland, Telemark County. He was the son of Bjørn Bjørnson Gardsjord (1731-1782) and Ingebjørg Rikardsdotter Svalastoga (1730-1776). He was born at Svalastoga, one of the area's oldest farm. Sveinung Svalastoga painted living room interiors, cupboards, chests and bowl with powerful and colorful designs, often randomly placed. Many of his works have been retained, both room decorations as well as smaller objects like chests and cupboards. He was also known for the mystical figures he cut and carved from twisted mountain pines, such as a mystical woman and her man, and a fairy tale princess set up at the corner of the storehouse. Telemark
Telemark is a traditional region, a former county, and a current electoral district in southern Norway. In 2020, Telemark merged with the former county of Vestfold to form the county of Vestfold og Telemark. Telemark borders the traditional regions and former counties of Vestfold, Buskerud, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. The name ''Telemark'' means the "mark of the Thelir", the ancient North Germanic tribe that inhabited what is now known as Upper Telemark in the Migration Period and the Viking Age. Vest-Telemark
The Vest-Telemark traditional district of Norway comprises the upper and western areas of the larger region of Upper Telemark in the county of Vestfold og Telemark. The region consists of six municipalities: Fyresdal, Tokke, Vinje, Nissedal, Kviteseid and Seljord. Vest-Telemark belongs to the traditional region Upper Telemark. The region is known for its folk traditions within music, clothing, handcrafts, food and architecture. The region is also distinctly marked by its dialects of Norwegian. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so.
