Rattling Brook
Rattling Brook is a local service district and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is in the north-central portion of the island of Newfoundland near Baie Verte and Springdale. Formerly a fishing village, its main residents are retirees and seasonal tourists. Geography Rattling Brook is in Newfoundland within Subdivision P of Division No. 8. The area in and around Rattling Brook is home to a diverse group of wildlife, both mammal and aquatic. During the summer months, species of fox, lynx and bear are not unusual. In the colder months, sealife observed in the bay area range from seals, humpback whales and several varieties of bird. The unique microclimate of the area provides shelter from harsher winds, guarded by the surrounding groups of cliff and rock formation enveloping the area. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has 175 unincorporated communities that are designated as local service districts (LSDs) for the purpose of providing water, sewer, fire, garbage, street lighting, animal control, and/or road maintenance services to ratepayers within a defined area. The services in an LSD are overseen by a committee of five to seven elected officials and delivered by hired staff. The costs are recovered by the LSD committee through taxes levied upon residents and other benefitting parties in the defined area. The 2016 Canadian census was an enumeration of Canadian residents, which counted a population of 35,151,728, a change from its 2011 population of 33,476,688. The census, conducted by Statistics Canada, was Canada's seventh quinquennial census. The official census day was May 10, 2016. Census web access codes began arriving in the mail on May 2, 2016. The 2016 census marked the reinstatement of the mandatory long-form census, which had been dropped in favour of the voluntary National Household Survey for the 2011 census. A designated place (DPL) is a type of community or settlement identified by Statistics Canada that does not meet the criteria used to define municipalities or population centres. DPLs are delineated every 5 years for the Canadian census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places such as cities, towns, and villages. Though lacking separate municipal government, DPLs otherwise physically resemble incorporated places. They are created by provincial or territorial governments for the purpose of providing data for settled concentrated populations that are identifiable by name but are not legally incorporated under the laws of the province/territory in which they are located.
