Rare (Asia Album)
''Rare'' is the seventh studio album by British rock band Asia, released in 1999 by Resurgence. It was made up of the instrumental music, which keyboard player Geoff Downes and guitarist John Payne composed for the soundtrack for David Attenborough's documentary nature film ''Salmon: Against the Tides'' (tracks 1–16) and for an unreleased CD-ROM video game (tracks 17–22). "The Exodus" is an adaptation of the main theme from the film ''Exodus'' (1960). ''Rare'' was recorded at the group's new recording studios, Loco Studios, located in Monmouthshire, Wales. It broke the tradition of naming Asia studio recordings with a word beginning and ending with the letter 'a'. However, the next album, '' Aura'' (2001), would resume this pattern. Asia (band)
Asia are an English rock supergroup formed in London in 1981. The most commercially successful line-up was its original, which consisted of four members of different progressive rock bands that had enjoyed great success in the 1970s: lead vocalist and bassist John Wetton of King Crimson and U.K., guitarist Steve Howe of Yes, keyboardist Geoff Downes of Yes and the Buggles, and drummer Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Their debut album, ''Asia'', released in 1982, remains their bestselling album and went to number one in several countries. The lead single from the album, " Heat of the Moment", remains their top charting and best-known song, reaching the top 40 in over a dozen markets and peaking in the U.S. at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. ''Aura'' is the eighth studio album by British progressive rock band Asia. As a result of the diverse array of guest musicians, ''Aura'' had a wide mix of sounds with some songs trying to replicate Asia's earlier style, while others retained the more acoustic Latin production started by ''Arena'' five years prior. Production ''Aura'' began recording in 1999 at Loco Studios located in the village of Llanhennock in Monmouthshire, Wales. The group had gotten reduced to the duo of singer-songwriter John Payne and musician Geoff Downes by this time, and they were determined to create a new sort of supergroup around ''Aura'' by bringing in multiple guest artists to collaborate with them. ''Exodus'' is a 1960 American epic historical drama film about the founding of the State of Israel. Produced and directed by Otto Preminger, the screenplay was adapted by Dalton Trumbo from the 1958 novel of the same name by Leon Uris. Monmouthshire ( cy, Sir Fynwy) is a county in the south-east of Wales. John Payne (singer)
John Payne (born 29 September 1958 in Luton, England) is an English musician, best known as the lead singer and bassist of Asia from 1991 to 2006, then from June 2007, with Asia featuring John Payne. He also is now in Dukes of the Orient but continues to tour with The Rock Pack and also Asia Featuring John Payne. John Payne became the frontman of Asia in 1991 at the invitation of founder member Geoff Downes, replacing vocalist/bassist John Wetton. During Payne's tenure, Asia released eight studio albums, several live albums and toured internationally. He is a founding and current member of modern progressive rock band GPS. He is also a guitarist, photographer, composer, recording engineer and record producer. Geoff Downes
Geoffrey Downes (born 25 August 1952) is an English keyboardist who gained fame as a member of the new wave group The Buggles with Trevor Horn, the progressive rock band Yes, and the supergroup Asia. Born in Stockport, Downes moved to London to pursue a music career. In 1977, he formed The Buggles with Horn and enjoyed success with their first album ''The Age of Plastic'' (1980) which included the worldwide hit single "Video Killed the Radio Star". In May 1980, Downes joined Yes with Horn and recorded ''Drama'' (1980). After Yes disbanded in 1981, Downes helped Trevor Horn to produce a second Buggles album, ''Adventures in Modern Recording'' (1981) although he was only primarily involved for half of it, and co-founded Asia with ex-Yes fellow musician Steve Howe. He left Asia in 1986, rejoined in 1990, and has been a part of the line-up since then; he released several solo albums and produced for several artists, including Mike Oldfield and the Thompson Twins.
