Rapperswil–Ziegelbrücke Railway Line
The Rapperswil–Ziegelbrücke railway line is a single-track standard-gauge railway line in Switzerland. It was built as part of the route from to Glarus, which was opened by the United Swiss Railways (german: Vereinigte Schweizerbahnen, VSB) on 15 February 1859. History The line was built as an extension of the Wallisellen–Uster–Rapperswil railway (''Glatthalbahn''), which had been extended from Wetzikon to Rüti on 15 August 1858 after its acquisition by the VSB. The line was opened at the same time as the Murg–Sargans line. The intervening section between Weesen and Murg was not completed until 1 July 1859. The line shortened the distance between Zurich and Chur. Its importance as a long-distance line was reduced by the opening on 20 September 1875 by the Swiss Northeast Railway (''Schweizerische Nordostbahn'') of the Lake Zürich left-bank railway, which runs from Zürich to Näfels via and Ziegelbrücke. As a result, the Rapperswil–Ziegelbr ...

Südostbahn
The Südostbahn (German, literally meaning "South-Eastern Railway") – commonly abbreviated to SOB – is a Swiss adhesion railway company, and a network in Central and Eastern Switzerland. It resulted from the merger of the original SOB with the Bodensee–Toggenburg railway (BT) at the end of 2001. The Schweizerische Südostbahn AG (Swiss South-Eastern Railway SA) is a small private railway jointly owned by the cantonal and federal governments as an Aktiengesellschaft (AG). Network The rail network of the Südostbahn (SOB) consists of that formerly owned by BT in northeast Switzerland (between Lake Constance and Toggenburg): * Romanshorn– St. Gallen St. Fiden line, * St. Gallen–Herisau–Degersheim–Wattwil line, and * (Wattwil–)Ebnat-Kappel–Krummenau– Nesslau-Neu Sankt Johann line, and that previously owned by the original SOB located predominantly in Central Switzerland: * Rapperswil–Pfäffikon SZ line, * Pfäffikon S ...

Obersee (Zürichsee)
The Obersee ("upper lake") is the smaller of the two parts of ''Zürichsee'' (Lake Zürich) in the cantons of St. Gallen and Schwyz in Switzerland. Geography ''Zürichsee'' is the common name for the ''lower'' (''Untersee'') northwestern section of , while the smaller southeastern ''upper'' (''Obersee'') lake area measures , separated by the Seedamm causeway, a Molasse formation connecting Rapperswil with the Hurden peninsula. Before 1951 the annual water level fluctuated more than , but since then the water level is strictly regulated and therefore between summer and winter differs an average of . The average lake level is now at 406 metres above sea level, while ''Obersee'' and ''Untersee'' differ by only . The ''Seedamm'' between Rapperswil and Hurden was used since about 5,000 years as a historical lake crossing. Since the 1870s a partially artificial road causeway and two bridges were added, to cross the most narrow and flatbedded area of the lake, carrying a railw ...

Railway Lines Opened In 1859
Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. In contrast to road transport, where the vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles (rolling stock) are directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Tracks usually consist of steel rails, installed on sleepers (ties) set in ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as "slab track", in which the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface. Rolling stock in a rail transport system generally encounters lower frictional resistance than rubber-tyred road vehicles, so passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer faciliti ...

SBB-CFF-FFS RBDe 560
The RBDe 560 (in the old naming style, the RBDe 4/4) and its derivatives provide motive power for S-Bahn, suburban, and regional traffic on the Swiss Federal Railways ( SBB) network. The derivative versions belong to the SBB as well as various private railroads. The locomotive and its matching Bt model ''Steuerwagen'' (translation: control car/cab car/driving trailer) form compositions generally known as the ''Neuer Pendelzug'' (New Push-pull Train), which is the source of the acronym NPZ. An NPZ trainset usually includes one or more intermediate cars. General information In 1984 four pre-series sets (each consisting of a motor car and a driving trailer) were delivered. Ordered in 1981, they originally bore the RBDe 4/4 designation and road numbers 2100-2103. All four trainsets (RBDe 560 + Bt) were delivered in different color schemes, one of which was the livery used for the main series (blue over white sides, yellow doors, and red faces). The striking contrast to the green co ...

SBB-CFF-FFS Ae 4/7
The Ae 4/7 was a universal locomotive of the Swiss Federal Railways, employing the so-called Buchli drive. Thanks to this drive construction, invented by Jakob Buchli, it was one of the longest-lasting locomotives. It was in regular use for 7 decades, from the 1920s into the 1990s, hauling freight and passenger trains all over Switzerland. History In the 1920s stronger locomotives were needed for the Swiss plateau (which has grades up to 12‰). The existing locomotives with three driven axles were a bit weak for their services. Because the Buchli drive already proved to be reliable on the , two prototypes of the Ae 4/7 were ordered in 1925. Subsequently, in total 127 were built between 1927 and 1934. While the mechanical part was built by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works, the electrical equipment was built in three varieties, because these parts were built by three different manufacturers, Brown, Boveri & Cie. Voralpen-Express
The ''Voralpen-Express'' (''VAE'') is a named train connecting small to medium-sized cities and villages in Central and Eastern Switzerland, carrying this name since 1992. It is operated by Südostbahn (SOB) and runs every hour between St. Gallen and Lucerne, bypassing Zurich. Its name derives from the fact that it traverses the Prealps (German: Voralpen). History The first through trains between Romanshorn (Lake Constance) and Arth-Goldau started in 1940 after the electrification of the Südostbahn line between Rapperswil and Arth-Goldau. Romanshorn–Rapperswil had been under wires since 1926/31. The trains, fir green MUs composed of CFZe 4/4 and BCFZe 4/4 (both later called ABe 4/4) motor coaches and coaches, were jointly operated by Bodensee–Toggenburg-Bahn (BT), Südostbahn (SOB), and the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS). In 1944, BT added buffet cars to the trainsets. In 1947, some trains continued from Arth-Goldau to Lucerne. In 1960, operation was changed t ...
