Rapenburgwal
The Rapenburgwal () is a secondary canal in Amsterdam in the east of the Amsterdam-Centrum district, in the Lastage neighborhood. Location The canal forms the northeast border of the island of Uilenburg. It is connected to Oudeschans and Uilenburgergracht, which delimit the northwest and the southeast of the island. It is crossed in its center section by Bridge 281, Peperbrug, which connects Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat on Uilenburg island to Peperstraat on Marken (Valkenburg) island. A 1737 map shows that the canal once ran further east to the Markengracht, which was back-filled in 1968 during construction of the IJtunnel. Markengracht
The Markengracht was a canal in Amsterdam. For many years it was at the heart of the slums of the poor Jewish neighborhood. It was filled in 1968 as part of a complete rehabilitation of the area combined with construction of the IJtunnel, opened on 30 October 1968. It is now the site of a complex of new residential buildings. Location The Markengracht was in the center of the poor part of the Jewish quarter. It ran between the Rapenburgwal and Houtkopersburgwal canals, which both used to extend southeast to the Markengracht. The Vinkenbuurt was on the southeast side of the canal, between the canal and Rapenburgerstraat. Valkenburgerstraat and the buildings of Marken were on the northwest side. Uilenburgergracht
The Uilenburgergracht is a secondary canal in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is located east of the Amsterdam-Centrum district, in the Lastage neighborhood. The Uilenburgergracht defines the southeastern border of Uilenburg Island. It is connected to Houtkopersburgwal and Rapenburgwal, which delimit the southwest and the northeast borders of the island. They lead to the Oudeschans canal along the northwest of the island. The Uilenburgergracht was dug in 1593. Houtkopersburgwal
The Houtkopersburgwal is a short secondary canal in Amsterdam. It is located in the east of the Amsterdam-Centrum district in the Lastage neighborhood. Location The Houtkopersburgwal connects the Oudeschans to the Uilenburgergracht around the island of Uilenburg. It constitutes the southwest limit of this island. Its route is parallel to that of Rapenburgwal, which defines the northeast border of the island. The canal is crossed by the Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat via Bridge 291, Steenvoetsluis, in the center of its length. The canal was dug following construction of the Uilenburgergracht in 1593 in order to link it to the Oudeschans. A 1737 map shows that the canal once ran further east to the Markengracht. The Oudeschans, or Oude Schans (Old Rampart), originally the Nieuwe Gracht, is a wide canal in the eastern part of the inner city of Amsterdam. Location The Oudeschans canal continues the line of the Zwanenburgwal, to which it is connected by the Sint Antoniesluis, a lock that is crossed by the bridge where Sint Antoniesbreestraat turns into Jodenbreestraat. Montelbaanstoren
The Montelbaanstoren is a tower on bank of the Oudeschans – a canal in Amsterdam. The original tower was built in 1516 as part of the Walls of Amsterdam for the purpose of defending the city and the harbour. The top half, designed by Hendrick de Keyser, was extended to its current, decorative form in 1606. Since then the tower has been 48m tall. Because the 3rd Duke of Alba proposed incorporating the tower into a castle (the ''Monte Albano'') the tower became known in Dutch as the ''Monte Albano Toren''. Over the years this became garbled to "Montelbaanstoren." The castle was never built. Lastage
Lastage is a neighborhood in the Amsterdam-Centrum, Centrum borough of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is located between the Geldersekade and Oudeschans, Amsterdam, Oudeschans canals, just east of old Middle Ages, medieval city. Today, the neighbourhood is also known as Nieuwmarktbuurt due to the fact that the Nieuwmarkt is comprised in the area; it is protected as a heritage site. IJtunnel
The IJtunnel, opened on 30 October 1968, is an automobile tunnel under the IJ that connects the centre of Amsterdam with Amsterdam-Noord. The tunnel is part of a route across Amsterdam that connects the Ringweg North with the Ringweg South near Duivendrecht, via Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg, Valkenburgerstraat, Weesperstraat, Wibautstraat and Gooiseweg (S112). The total length of the tunnel, including on- and off-ramps, is 1682 metres. The covered part is 1039 metres long. The deepest point of the tunnel lies 20.32 metres below sea-level. The tunnel was built of sections of rectangular concrete constructions of 24.8 x 8.75 metres, subdivided into two tubes for automobile traffic and in between tubes for cables and pipes. Oudeschans
Oudeschans () is a small village with a population of around 100 in the municipality of Westerwolde in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. The 16th-century fortification is now a state protected village area with several national heritage sites, among which a 17th-century garrison church, and the Vestingmuseum Oudeschans. Etymology The fortification was initially named Bellingwolderschans, meaning Sconce of Bellingwolde, in 1593.
