Ranchuelo is a town and municipality in the Villa Clara Province of Cuba. It was founded in 1734 and has a municipal population of 59,062, of which about 16,804 in the town itself. History Originally named Boca de Ranchuelo, the settlement was founded by Dionisio Consuegra on October 1, 1734. In 1856 it was linked to the national rail network, and in 1879 gained the municipal status. Geography The town is divided into the barrios of Norte, Poza de la China, Sitio Viejo and Sur. Esperanza (Ranchuelo)
Esperanza ( Spanish for "Hope"), also known as ''La Esperanza'', is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Ranchuelo, in Villa Clara Province. With a 2011 population of 11,555 it is the most populated municipal settlement after Ranchuelo. History Founded in 1809 and originally named ''Puerta de Golpe'' (i.e. "Slamming Door"), Esperanza is a former municipality merged in Ranchuelo after the administrative re-adjustment of 1976. The old municipality had a total population of 20,759 in 1943, and occupied the northern part of the current ''municipio'' of Ranchuelo with an area of 319 km2. It included the villages of Asiento Viejo, Jabonillar, Nuevas, Purial, San José and San Vicente. Villa Clara is one of the provinces of Cuba. It is located in the central region of the island bordering with the Atlantic at north, Matanzas Province by west, Sancti Spiritus Province by east, and Cienfuegos Province on the South. The ''Carretera Central'' (CC), meaning "Central Road", is a west-east highway spanning the length of the island of Cuba. History Formal construction began in 1927 during the Gerardo Machado administration. It runs along the island of Cuba from west to east, between Pinar del Río and Oriente. Santa Clara is the capital city of the Cuban province of Villa Clara Province, Villa Clara. It is centrally located in the province and Cuba. Santa Clara is the List of cities in Cuba, fifth-most populous Cuban city, with a population of nearly 250,000. History Santa Clara was founded by 175 people on July 15, 1689. 138 of them represented two large families already living in the area, who owned land next to the new city. The other 37 came from seven other families and included a priest and governor, all originating in the coastal city of San Juan de los Remedios. The population of Remedios, Cuba, Remedios had to choose between leaving their city, constantly being besieged by pirates, or staying. María Dámasa Jova Baró
María Dámasa Jova Baró (December 11, 1890 – February 11, 1940) was a Cuban writer, educator and feminist. Biography The daughter of Feliciano Jova and María del Socorro Baró, she was born María Dámasa Jova in Ranchuelo; her father died when she was less than two years old and she moved with her mother to Cienfuegos. Jova Baró trained as a primary school teacher. Jova Baró was the first Afro-Cuban woman to own a printing press; she began publishing the children's magazine ''Ninfas'' in January 1929. She also produced a children's radio program "La Hora Teatral Ninfas" and established a literary and artistic club for children. Jova Baró was also founder and editor-in-chief for the literary and critical publication ''Umbrales Revista Literaria Artistica'' from 1934 to 1937. Samuel Feijóo
Samuel Feijóo (March 31, 1914 in San Juan de los Yeras, Las Villas, Cuba – July 14, 1992 in La Habana, Cuba) was a Cuban writer and artist specializing in painting and illustration. Career Feijóo was a self-taught multifaceted artist and writer. He was a promoter of the popular artists movement in Las Villas, Cuba in 1960 and after he was vice-president of the Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC) in the same province. Feijóo was the director of publications and editor at the Universidad Central de Las Villas and was founder and director at Signos' magazine in 1969. In the 1940s he published some collections of poems such as Comrade celeste (1944), Aventuras con los aguinaldos (1947) and Beth-el (1949), among others. His narrative work is marked by the rural environment, traditions, peasant folklore and Afro-Cuban mythology. Santo Domingo is a municipality and town in the Villa Clara Province of Cuba. It was founded in 1819 and established as a municipality in 1879. Geography The town is divided into the wards (''barrios'') of Este (east) and Oeste (west). Cruces, Cuba
Cruces () is a municipality and town in Cienfuegos Province, Cuba. It is the home of the Mal Tiempo National Park which commemorates a battle in the 1895 War of Independence. History The town was founded in 1852 in a place known as ''Sabana de Ibarra''. The construction of a railway between Cienfugos Province and Villa Clara began in 1848, causing an economic boom and the expansion of the town.
