Rajinder Singh Of Patiala
Maharaja Sir Rajinder Singh (25 May 1872 – 8 November 1900) was a Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala from 1876 to 1900. In 1897, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Star of India for his bravery, by the colonial government. Described as "the first reigning Prince to blend the elements of the English gentleman and Indian potentate." In the 1870s, he became one of the first Indians to own a car, a French De Dion-Bouton and in 1892. Singh died following a riding accident. He was known for playing polo, cricket, field hockey and English billiards. The maharaja defied his subjects and the British government when he married Florence Bryan, the daughter of his Irish horse master, persuading her to convert to the Sikh faith. He was a close friend of William Beresford and of Frederick Roberts. The Irish composer Thomas O'Brien Butler (1861–1915), who spent some time in India, dedicated a song composition to him. Rajinder Singh (brigadier)
Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal, MVC (14 June 1899 – 26/27 October 1947), also remembered as the Saviour of Kashmir, was an officer in the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces. He briefly served as the Chief of Staff of State Forces and died fighting during the First Kashmir War. Rajinder Singh and his small contingent of about 200 men successfully delayed the advance of a much larger force of Pakistani tribal raiders near Uri for several days, during which the Maharaja of Kashmir acceded to India and the Indian forces air-lifted for the defence of Kashmir. On 30 December 1949, he was posthumously awarded Maha Vir Chakra, independent India’s second highest military decoration. He was the first Indian to receive the honour. Rajinder Singh, MBE, more popularly known as the 'Skipping Sikh', is a British-Indian septuagenarian health and fitness personality. Career During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Singh started sharing exercise videos to inspire older members of the Asian community to stay healthy whilst also raising money for the NHS.
