The government of Abu Dhabi is planning a tram system, as part of a broader long-term transport strategy. In 2009, it was suggested that the tram system would enter service in 2014; however, as of 2021, nothing has yet materialised. The network is expected to cost around $5Bn. Gulf Railway
The Gulf Railway, also known as the GCC Railway, is a proposed railway system to connect all six Gulf Cooperation Council member states in Eastern Arabia. The rail network will have a total length of 2,177 km. The project is estimated to cost US$250 billion. It was scheduled to be completed by 2023, although as of 2022, construction work has yet to start. Each of the six GCC member states is responsible for implementing the portion of the project that lies within its territory, and will construct its own railway lines and branches, stations and freight terminals. The cost will be shared by the six countries in proportion to the length of the rail network in each country. As a result, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia will spend the most on the project, followed by Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Etihad Rail ( ar, الاتحاد للقطارات) is the United Arab Emirates national railway network. It was established in June 2009 under Federal Law No. 2 to manage the development, construction and operation of the United Arab Emirates' national freight and passenger railway network. Etihad Rail aims to link the UAE's principal centres of industry and population, and to link these centres with other railways throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council. Masdar City ( ar, مدينة مصدر, Madīnat Maṣdar, lit=Source City) is a planned city project in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. Its core is being built by Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, with the majority of seed capital provided by the Government of Abu Dhabi. Designed by the British architectural firm Foster and Partners, the city relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources. Masdar City is being constructed east-south-east of the city of Abu Dhabi, a five minute drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport and 40 minutes from Dubai. Abu Dhabi Metro is an under construction metro line that will be part of a larger transit network for the city of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Plan The entire transit network will be 131 km long when complete, including an partially underground metro line, two light rail lines and bus rapid transit.Some recent online discussions mention a monorail, but it does NOT seem to part of the most recent plan. There was a monorail under discussion in 2006.
