Rafiki
is a 2018 Kenyan drama film directed by Wanuri Kahiu. ''Rafiki'' is the story of romance that grows between two young women, Kena and Ziki, amidst family and political pressures around LGBT rights in Kenya. The film had its international premiere in the ''Un Certain Regard'' section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival; it was the first Kenyan film to be screened at the festival. Plot Kena helps her father John Mwaura run a small convenience store in Nairobi as he campaigns for a local election. Kena lives with her mother, who isn't really on speaking terms with John. Kena starts flirting with Ziki, a neighbourhood girl with colourful hair, who also happens to be the daughter of Peter Okemi, John's political rival. Kena and Ziki have a number of romantic dates, and quickly become very close, but there are tensions about displaying their affection in public because homosexuality is illegal in Kenya. Wanuri Kahiu
Wanuri Kahiu (born 21 June 1980) is a Kenyan film director, producer, and author. She is considered to be “one of Africa's most aspiring directors, being part of a new, vibrant crop of talents representing contemporary African culture”. She has received several awards and nominations for the films which she directed, including the awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2009 for her dramatic feature film ''From a Whisper''. Samantha Mugatsia
Samantha Mugatsia (born 1992) is a Kenyan actress. Biography Mugatsia was born in 1992, the child of Grace Gitau. They grew up in Nairobi and served as the drummer for the band The Yellow Machine. They also did some modeling work. Mugatsia studied law at Catholic University of Eastern Africa, but put their studies on hold to begin their acting career. In November 2016, they were attending an artists' pop-in when they were introduced to film director Wanuri Kahiu, who told them she was writing a script and wanted to show Mugatsia. Sheila Munyiva (born 27 March 1993) is a Kenyan actress and film director. Biography Munyiva was born in 1993 in Nairobi. She grew up watching ''Hannah Montana'' and believed her skin should be fairer and hair straighter. She visited the UK frequently because her mother lived there. LGBT Rights In Kenya
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Kenya face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Sodomy is a felony per Section 162 of the Kenyan Penal Code, punishable by 14 years' imprisonment, and any sexual practices between males (termed "gross indecency") are a felony under section 165 of the same statute, punishable by 5 years' imprisonment. While female same sex-sexual activity is not explicitly prohibited by law, lesbians, bisexual women and transgender people are not recognised in the Kenyan Constitution, and are discriminated against, covertly, as well as undergo corrective rape practices by heterosexual men. The Kenya Film Classification Board (abbreviated as KFCB) is a state corporation that operates under the Government of Kenya whose mandate is to "regulate the creation, broadcasting, possession, distribution and exhibition of films by rating them." The Board was founded in 1963 with the commencement of the laws outlined in the Films and Stage Plays Act of 1962 (Section 11) and has since involved itself in the rating and classification of films and television programmes. 2018 Cannes Film Festival
The 71st annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 8 to 19 May 2018. Australian actress Cate Blanchett acted as President of the Jury. The Japanese film ''Shoplifters'', directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, won the Palme d'Or.
