Rafael Hechanova
Rafael "Paing" Hechanova Sr. (July 8, 1928 – August 26, 2021) was a Filipino basketball player who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics. Early life Rafael "Paing" Hechanova was born on July 8, 1928 in the then-city of Jaro in Iloilo province. Career Playing career Shortly after World War II, Hechanova played varsity basketball for the University of Santo Tomas's (UST) Glowing Goldies under coach Herminio Silva in the UAAP. He was recognized as Mr. Basketball in 1951 by the Philippine Sportswriters Association for helping UST win titles in the UAAP, National Inter-Collegiate, and National Senior. He also played for UST's volleyball and golf teams. Hechanova suited up for the Philippines men's national team helping the team win the gold medal in the 1951 and 1954 editions. Jaro, Iloilo City
Jaro (; ) is a district of Iloilo City in the Philippine province of Iloilo on Panay Island in the Western Visayas region. It is the largest in terms of area and population of Iloilo City's seven districts, with 130,700 people in the 2020 census. Once a separate city, Jaro merged with Iloilo City when it was re-incorporated in the 1940s during the American administration in the Philippines. Jaro is the largest of all the seven districts comprising the City of Iloilo. The Iloilo City district of La Paz and the present municipalities of Leganes and Pavia, adjoined as historical parts of Jaro before they became independent. Cecil G. Hechanova (1932/1933 – March 22, 2016) was the founding chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission from the creation of the government's sports agency in 1990 up until 1992. Career He was the non-playing captain of the Philippine national team who participated in the Putra Golf Cup from 1970 to 1972. From 1988 to 1993, Hechanova was the executive director of the Philippine Golf Foundation. He was also the man behind the Philippine Corporate Cup in 1989. He became prominent after he appointed by then president Corazon Aquino as the first chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, the government's body that focused on sports development. The Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) was a sports association which existed in Manila, Philippines from 1938 to 1981. Throughout its existence, it staged various sports and was participated by prominent Philippine companies. After World War II, its basketball tournament became the country's premier basketball league until 1975, when nine of its members broke away to form the very first professional basketball league in Asia, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
