Clayton, Georgia
Clayton is a city in Rabun County, Georgia, United States. Its population was 2,003 at the 2020 census. The county seat of Rabun County, it is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. History The area that eventually became Clayton was called the Dividings because it sat at the intersection of three important Cherokee people trails. Explorer and naturalist William Bartram came through the Dividings in May 1775 while exploring what was later organized as Rabun County. Much later, after Clayton had grown to include the Dividings, two of the old Cherokee trails were improved as the main roads for Clayton and the county: U.S. 23/ 441 and U.S. 76. Claytonsville was founded by European-American settlers in 1821 as the seat of Rabun County. In 1823, the town was incorporated and renamed Clayton. Rabun County () is the north-easternmost county in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,883, up from 16,276 in 2010. The county seat is Clayton. With an average annual rainfall of over , Rabun County has the title of the rainiest county in Georgia and is one of the rainiest counties east of the Cascades. The year 2018 was the wettest on record in the county's history. The National Weather Service cooperative observation station in northwest Rabun's Germany Valley measured 116.48 inches of rain during the year. Dillard is a town in Rabun County, Georgia, United States. census, the city population was 337. History John Dillard settled in the area around what is now Dillard with his son, James Dillard, ''circa'' 1823. James took title to of land by purchasing the lottery rights of land holders in Rabun County. John Dillard served as a lieutenant in the Virginia Militia in the American Revolution, during which he was in the Battle of Guilford Court House and other battles. Both James and John were residents of Buncombe County, North Carolina prior to their settlement on lands now comprising Dillard. The small town is now known primarily for the Dillard House, a regionally well-known inn, restaurant and conference center that serves traditional southern fare. John M. Mountain City is an incorporated town in Rabun County, Georgia, United States. The population was 904 at the 2020 census. The town straddles the Eastern Continental Divide in a deep gap in the Blue Ridge Mountain front. The gap allows U.S. Route 441 to cross the range at an elevation of 2168 feet without the significant grade required by roadways at most other mountain passes along the Georgia Blue Ridge. Pine Mountain is an unincorporated community located in eastern Rabun County, Georgia, Rabun County, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States, at an elevation of 1611 feet. It is one of only two Georgia communities located north of South Carolina (the other is the city of Sky Valley, Georgia, Sky Valley), due to a quirk of geography: the Chattooga River is the primary tributary of the Savannah River and Tugalo River specified in the 1787 Treaty of Beaufort, but runs perpendicular to them. The main highway is Georgia 28, which runs north-northwest to Highlands, North Carolina, and south-southeast to Walhalla, South Carolina (and on to Augusta, Georgia), keeping its number in all three states. Sky Valley is a city in Rabun County, Georgia, United States and is nestled in a mountain valley on the northwest slopes of Rabun Bald, Georgia's second-highest peak. Incorporated in March 1978, it recorded a total population of 250 as of the 2000 U.S. census, and 482 as of 2020. Sky Valley shares ZIP code 30537 with nearby Dillard. History The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Tiger as a town in 1904. There are two popular legends as to the derivation of the town's name: the first is that it was named after a Cherokee chief named Tiger Tail, while the second (and more likely) story is that the name originated from the cry of roaming panthers.
