ROOT!
Root! (stylised ROOT!) was an Australian rock band from Melbourne formed in 2005. Their music combines alt-country, blues and indie rock with elements of spoken word, satire, social commentary and post-modernism. They have gained attention through a band member being a former member of Melbourne band TISM. History In early 2005, Root! began as a series of demos written solely by lead singer Damian Cowell ("DC Root"). In late 2006, guitarist Henri Grawe ("Henri Root") was hired as a tradesperson to build a set of shelves for DC. "Henri came 'round to my house to build me some shelves and I discovered that he was a jazz trained musician". During 2006, the group was fleshed out with Steve Root on keyboards and Barnaby Root on drums. Cowell and Grawe knew each other as far back as 2000 – Grawe had worked with Cowell's former band TISM on their 2001 album '' De Rigueurmortis''. Their first concert as a group was made at the closing party of Melbourne's Spanish Club on 17 June 20 ...

TISM
TISM (an acronym of This Is Serious Mum) are a seven-piece anonymous alternative rock band, formed in Melbourne, Australia on 30 December 1982 by vocalist/drummer Humphrey B. Flaubert, bassist/vocalist Jock Cheese and keyboardist/vocalist Eugene de la Hot Croix Bun, with vocalist Ron Hitler-Barassi joining the group the following year. These four members have formed the core of the band since their inception, with the line-up being rounded out by guitarists Leak Van Vlalen (1982-1991), Tokin' Blackman (1991-2004; died 2008) and Vladimir Lenin-McCartney (2022-present), as well as backing vocalists/dancers Les Miserables and Jon St. Peenis. Noted for their dark humour, sarcastic delivery and melodic songwriting, the seven members of TISM appear in public as a pseudonymous, semi-paramilitary collective masked in a variety of balaclavas (usually as part of a more elaborate costume), and are known for their "chaotic" appearances in Australian media, often frustrating interviewers ...

Get Up Yourself
''Get Up Yourself'' is an EP by Australian rock band Root!, released on 23 August 2008. It is both a follow-up to the band's previous release '' Root Supposed He Was Out of the Question...'' and a sample of the upcoming second album '' Surface Paradise'' (formerly ''Root is the Money of All Evil''). The EP contains three tracks of Root!'s style of country and rock music and one track composed of a reworking of the title track featuring DC Root's signature ironic lyrics. It is an entirely spoken word track. The band toured outside of Victoria for the first time in support of the release. Frontman DC was also interviewed on Triple J's popular breakfast show to promote the tour and EP. Whilst on air, he continually denied any link to Melbourne band TISM and also recited a poem about Stephanie Rice. Furthermore, a track titled "Introducing Get Up Yourself" appeared on the band's MySpace page and featured brief samples from "Get Up Yourself" and "Get Up Yourself Part 2" as well as ...

Surface Paradise
''Surface Paradise'' is the second full-length album by Australian rock band Root!, released on 24 July 2009. The album follows the previous year's EP release ''Get Up Yourself'', of which several references are made to. Continuing the band's more rock-oriented explorations since their debut, the album features several recurring motifs, both musical and lyrical and can be considered a loose concept album. The album's concept is that of the fictional, and perhaps metaphorical, 'Surface Paradise', which is most specifically referred to in the album's title tracks. The paradise itself is directly mentioned as a being like a supermarket, yet it is likely to be a non-physical place, where the world's trendy and elite are seen to reside. The album features extensive liner notes Liner notes (also sleeve notes or album notes) are the writings found on the sleeves of LP record albums and in booklets that come inserted into the compact disc jewel case or the equivalent packaging fo ...

Flying Burrito Brothers
The Flying Burrito Brothers are an American country rock band, best known for their influential 1969 debut album, ''The Gilded Palace of Sin''. Although the group is perhaps best known for its connection to band founders Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman (both formerly of The Byrds), the group underwent many personnel changes and has existed in various incarnations. A lineup with no original members (and derived from the 2000s-era Burrito Deluxe) currently performs as The Burrito Brothers. Early evolution (1968–1969) Ian Dunlop and Mickey Gauvin, formerly of Gram Parsons' International Submarine Band (ISB), founded the original Flying Burrito Brothers and named it after Parsons informed them of his new country focus. This incarnation of the band never recorded as such, and after heading East allowed Gram Parsons to take the name. With the original incarnation of the band out of the picture, the "West Coast" Flying Burrito Brothers were founded in 1968 in Los Angeles, California ...

Pedal Steel
The pedal steel guitar is a console-type of steel guitar with pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of certain strings to enable playing more varied and complex music than any previous steel guitar design. Like all steel guitars, it can play unlimited glissandi (sliding notes) and deep vibrati—characteristics it shares with the human voice. Pedal steel is most commonly associated with American country music and Hawaiian music. Pedals were added to a lap steel guitar in 1940, allowing the performer to play a major scale without moving the bar and also to push the pedals while striking a chord, making passing notes slur or bend up into harmony with existing notes. The latter creates a unique sound that has been popular in country and western music— a sound not previously possible on steel guitars before pedals were added. From its first use in Hawaii in the 19th century, the steel guitar sound became popular in the United States in the first half of the 20th century an ...
