Royal Naval Air Station Crail or RNAS Crail (HMS Jackdaw) is a former Fleet Air Arm base and airfield located east of Anstruther, Fife and from St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. It was home to a site of the Joint Services School for Linguists from 1956 to 1960. Crail (); gd, Cathair Aile) is a former royal burgh, parish and community council area (Royal Burgh of Crail and District) in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The locality has an estimated population of 1,630 (2018). Etymology The name ''Crail'' was recorded in 1148 as ''Cherel'' and in 1153 as ''Karel''. The first element is the Pictish ''*cair'' (c.f. Welsh ''caer'') meaning "fort", though this word seems to have been borrowed into Gaelic. The second element may be either Gaelic ''ail'', "rocks", or more problematically Pictish ''*al''; no certain instance of this word exists in P-Celtic. 826 Naval Air Squadron was a Fleet Air Arm aircraft squadron formed during World War II which has been reformed several times since then until last disbanded in 1993. History Second World War No. 826 Squadron was formed at RNAS Ford in Sussex as a torpedo bomber squadron equipped with 12 Fairey Albacore biplanes.Brown 1972, p. 48. After initial training it was placed under the operational control of RAF Coastal Command, flying its first mission, a daylight bombing raid against a road junction at Nieuwpoort, Belgium on 31 May 1940. History Pre-war 823 squadron was formed on 3 April 1933 by a merger of No's 441 and 448 (Fleet Spotter Reconnaissance) Flights aboard HMS ''Glorious'', a cruiser converted to an aircraft carrier in the 1920s. 812 Naval Air Squadron was a Naval Air Squadron of the British Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. It was active between 1933 and 1956, and saw service in both World War II and the Korean War. It was first founded in 1933, and served during World War II, seeing action in the battle of the Atlantic and on Russian convoys, and was eventually disbanded in 1956.
