Rini, Uttarakhand
Rini (Garhwali : Raini and Reni) is a village in Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, north India. Rini is located on the river banks at the confluence of Rishi Ganga and Dhauli Ganga rivers. Location Rini is on the southern embankment of the Rishi Ganga and Dhauli Ganga gorge, directly at the northwestern edge of Nanda Devi National Park. Traffic connection is via the Joshimath-Malari Road, next localities are Tapovan to the west and Lata to the east. History The 1973 Chipko movement for forest conservation started in Rini. On 7 February 2021, Rini was severely struck during the 2021 Uttarakhand flood. The flood supposedly emerged from or near Nanda Devi glacier and ran downstream the Rishi Ganga gorge, destroying the Rishi Ganga Dam and power plant, before hitting the village. Marinus "Rini" Wagtmans (born 26 December 1946 in Sint Willebrord) is a former Dutch professional road bicycle racer. He was the nephew of Wout Wagtmans, a former professional who had won the Tour de Romandie stage race in 1952. His father was a masseur while Tour de France stage winner Wim van Est was his neighbour. In 1968 Rini turned professional. The following year he finished third overall in the 1969 Vuelta a España. He rode four editions of the Tour de France and won three stages, one in 1970, one in 1971 and one in 1972. In the 1970 Tour de France he finished fifth overall. Lucille Corinne Templeton (July 1, 1935 – June 15, 1986), better known as "Rini" Templeton, was an American graphic artist, sculptor, and political activist. She was most active in Mexico and the Southwestern United States, although she also volunteered in Cuba and Nicaragua after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and the electoral victory of the F.S.L.N.
