REQ
Ian Cassar (born 20 February 1966), better known as Req (stylized as REQ), is an English DJ, record producer, and graffiti artist. Career In the words of AllMusic's Sean Cooper, Req began in his native Brighton as "one of the U.K.'s most respected graffiti artists." He began his graffiti work in 1984 after the Beat Street film hyped his sense to the basic tenets of hip hop. Although he was a disc jockey for many years without musical training, Req only began producing music of his own in the mid-1990s when he signed to Skint Records, who issued his earliest releases. As a graffiti artist, he had previously been a member of the largely musical collective Beats International. His debut album, ''One'', was critically acclaimed by such publications as ''The Wire'' and production duo Coldcut. ''Frequency Jams'' is the second studio album by English experimental music, experimental electronic music, electronic producer Req, released in 1998 on Skint Records. As with his debut album, ''One (Req album), One'', ''Frequency Jams'' was recorded on a lo-fi music, lo-fi 4-track recorder and featuries abstract arrangements that incorporate esoteric, fractured beats, while also introducing new, eclectic influences such as jazz-funk and avant-rock into Req's music. Some felt the album pushed Req closer to the avant-garde, with stronger usage of noise music, noise. The album has received critical acclaim for its bleak, dark tone and atypical production. ''One'' (also known as ''Req One'') is the debut studio album by English experimental electronic producer Req, recorded from September 1995 to 1996 and released on Skint Records in 1997. After releasing several EPs, Req decided to release an album to spread his sound. His conception for ''One'' was to create music that hints at a direction without ever arriving at one. Music critics had difficulty defining the album's style, and is seen as a "blunted take" on trip hop with downtempo ambience. The album was well received by critics, who praised its unique sound and production. Brighton
Brighton () is a seaside resort and one of the two main areas of the City of Brighton and Hove in the county of East Sussex, England. It is located south of London. Skint Records
Skint Records is a Brighton and Hove based dance music record label owned by JC Reid, Tim Jeffery and Damian Harris. It was created as a sublabel of Loaded Records, also founded by Reid and Jeffery. Along with Wall of Sound, the label was a leader in the big beat music scene of the mid to late 1990s. The label's roster at this time included big beat scene leaders Fatboy Slim, Hardknox, Indian Ropeman, Freq Nasty and X-Press 2. Towards the end of the 1990s and at the start of the 21st century the label expanded its range of releases to include more house based songs. The most prominent example was " Lazy" by X-Press 2, which charted at number 2 in the UK Singles Chart.
