Kenhardt
Kenhardt (founded 1868) is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. This little town is about 120 km from Upington, the largest town in the area. History On 27 December 1868, special magistrate Maximillian Jackson with a police contingent, was sent to act against the Griquas in the area. The Griqua's anti-colonial resistance had erupted into an open conflict. Jackson arrived in Kenhardt and set up camp under a giant camelthorn tree. This has been for a long time the most remote settlement in the North-Western Cape. With time the town developed from under this tree, becoming a municipality in 1909. The Hartbees River, with its many sweet thorn trees, provides a green belt irrigated by the Rooiberg Dam. Kenhardt is famous for being at the heart of the Dorper sheep-farming area. Carnarvon, South Africa
Carnarvon is a small town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. History Carnarvon was established in 1853 on a route between Cape Town and Botswana that was followed by early explorers and traders. It was originally established as a mission station of the Rhenish Missionary Society and named Harmsfontein. The Rhenish missionaries also established Schietfontein to the west, which later developed into a village. In 1874 Harmsfontein was renamed Carnarvon in honour of the British Colonial Secretary, Lord Carnarvon (1831–1890). The town is known for its corbelled houses - domed-roof houses constructed from flat stones - which were built between 1811 and 1815. The Afrikaans poet A.G. Visser had strong associations with Carnarvon, and the house where he lived in the town still stands. Carnarvon Museum contains exhibits on the region's cultural history. R27 (South Africa)
The R27 is a provincial route in South Africa that consists of two disjoint segments. The first segment, also known as the West Coast Highway, connects Cape Town with Velddrif along the West Coast. The second runs from Vredendal via Vanrhynsdorp, Calvinia, Brandvlei and Kenhardt to Keimoes on the N14 near Upington. The connection between Velddrif and Vredendal has never been built, although it can be driven on various gravel roads. Originally the R27 designation continued beyond Upington all the way to Pretoria, but this section became part of the N14 and various other roads. In Cape Town the highway connects with FW de Klerk Boulevard ( N1) near the Table Bay Harbor and then runs north along the coast for stretch that is known as Marine Drive. The R357 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Nieuwoudtville and Kimberley via Loeriesfontein and Prieska. Route The route's western origin is the R27 at Nieuwoudtville. It heads north-east to reach the R355, with which it is co-signed for 10 kilometres. The routes reach Louriesfontein, where they diverge. The R357 heads north-east again to reach Brandvlei. Here it again crosses the R27, at a staggered junction. East of the town, the route gives off the south-easterly R353, and heads east. It reaches Vanwyksvlei, where it meets the R361, the two are co-signed, and head north-east. The routes diverge just outside the town. The R357 continues east-north-east to Prieska. Just before the town, it meets the north-easterly R386 at its northern terminus. It then passes through Prieskapoort Pass and crosses the N10 to enter Prieska.
