Rio Verde, Goiás
Rio Verde is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Goiás. It is a fast-growing center and is the largest producer of grains in the state. Location It is the center of the Sudoeste de Goiás Microregion, situated at a distance of 229 km (142 mi) from Goiânia, the capital of the state and 420 km (261 mi) from Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. Highway connections from Goiânia and these following other cities; Abadia de Goiás, Guapó, Indiara, Acreúna, and Santo Antônio da Barra are made by BR-060. The annual average temperature is between 20 °C and 35 °C. Vegetation is mainly cerrado, with some residual forests. The bordering cities are Aparecida do Rio Doce, Cachoeira Alta, Caiapônia, Castelândia, Jataí, Maurilândia, Montividiu, Paraúna, Quirinópolis, Santa Helena de Goiás, and Santo Antonio da Barra. Río Verde (Spanish for "green river") is a river in central Mexico. It is a tributary of the Río Grande de Santiago. Its basin is mostly in the state of Jalisco, and extends into portions of Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, and San Luis Potosí. Proposed dams Two dams are proposed on the Río Verde. El Purgatorio reservoir is proposed on the lower river, near its confluence with the Rio Grande de Santiago. It is intended to supply drinking water to the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. Construction of the dam began in 2011. The Jalisco communities of Temacapulín, Palmarejo, and Acasico, which would be permanently flooded by the reservoir, have opposed the project, and succeeded in delaying its completion with lawsuits. As of August 2021 the dam is not completed and work had not resumed. The El Zapotillo dam site is further upstream on the Río Verde. The Rio Verde (Portuguese for "green river") is a river of São Paulo state in southeastern Brazil. Course The Rio Verde basin is in the Juréia-Itatins Ecological Station, in the municipality of Iguape, São Paulo. The river rises in the Juréia Massif, which descends steeply to the Atlantic Ocean to the south east. The Rio Verde has clear water fed by the waterfalls of Juréia. Conservation In the late 1970s the Department of the Environment planned to develop a "green" housing project on the banks of the Rio Verde. The project was cancelled in the 1980s when the Empresa Nuclebrás Brasileira decided to build the Iguape 4 and Iguape 5 power plants in a area that included the entire Serra da Juréia. By law, the area surrounding the nuclear power plant would have to be made an ecological station.
