Régates Rémoises, originally known as the ''Société Nautique des Régates Rémoises'', is a major French rowing (sport), rowing club in Reims, France. It was founded in 1854. History The club was founded in 1854, 16 years after the ''Société des régates du Harvre'' (the oldest French rowing club,{{Cite web, url=http://avironfrance.fr/ffa/ambitions/notre-histoire, title=Notre Histoire - FFA, website=avironfrance.fr, language=fr, access-date=2018-10-23 founded in 1838. It is among the oldest surviving sports clubs in the world. Between 1995 and 2008, the club was consistently placed among the top three rowing clubs in France. In 1995 and 1996, between 2003 and 2005, and in 2008, the club was ranked first. It has experienced a slight decline in fortunes since 2013, having fallen to 18th position, and more recently to 20th. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys.
