Ryukyuan Americans
Ryukyuan Americans are Americans who are fully or partially of Ryukyuan descent. The vast majority of them trace their family history to the Okinawa Islands. History Immigration The first Ryukyuans to migrate to the United States were 26 Okinawan contract laborers led by Kyuzo Toyama. They arrived at the Territory of Hawaii on January 8, 1900, in order to work on the sugar plantations there. In the following years, more Ryukyuans (mainly Okinawans) started to settle in Hawaii. Some of them would end up migrating to the continental U.S., with higher concentrations of them living on the West Coast. Culture Identity A lot of Ryukyuan Americans view themselves to be distinct from the Japanese. is a Japanese politician and the current Governor of Okinawa Prefecture since August 2018. Tamaki was a member of the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly for Okinawa City from 2002 to 2005 and became the first Amerasian member of the Japanese House of Representatives as the representative for Okinawa Prefecture's 3rd district from 2009 to 2012 and 2014 to 2018. Tamaki was elected governor as an independent in the 2018 Okinawa gubernatorial election following the untimely death of Governor Takeshi Onaga. He was re-elected again in 2022. Creole Language

Hawaii United Okinawa Association
The Hawaii United Okinawa Association (HUOA, ja, ハワイ沖縄連合会, ''Hawai Okinawa Rengō-kai'') is a cultural organization for the Okinawan community of Hawaii. History The HUOA was founded in 1951 under the name “United Okinawan Association of Hawaii” and was renamed to its current title in 1995. As a result of World War II, Okinawa was severely damaged, with much of its infrastructure and a third of its population perishing. To help with Okinawa's post-war recovery, the HUOA sent clothing, livestock and other essentials to the island, including 550 pigs. When the United States military occupied Okinawa, the HUOA was recognized as the official representative of the Hawaii Okinawans. The Territory of Hawaii or Hawaii Territory ( Hawaiian: ''Panalāʻau o Hawaiʻi'') was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from April 30, 1900, until August 21, 1959, when most of its territory, excluding Palmyra Island, was admitted to the United States as the 50th U.S. state, the State of Hawaii.
