Rylands Professor Of Biblical Criticism And Exegesis
The Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis is a professorship or chair in the Department of Religions and Theology at the University of Manchester, England. Formerly in the Faculty of Theology, the chair resides now in the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. The chair was established in 1904 as one of two chairs endowed by Enriqueta Rylands in the former Faculty of Theology which was founded the same year. The current holder of the chair is Professor Peter Oakes, who was appointed in 2020. Enriqueta Rylands
Enriqueta Augustina Rylands (31 May 1843 – 4 February 1908) was a British philanthropist who founded the John Rylands Library in Manchester. Early life Enriqueta Augustina was born in Havana, Cuba, and was one of five children including José Esteban (later Stephen Joseph, who was her twin brother), Blanca Catalina and Leocadia Fernanda. Her father was Stephen Cattley Tennant (1800–1848), a merchant whose family came from Yorkshire, and her mother, Juana Camila Dalcour (1818–1855).Farnie (2006) Tennant retired to Liverpool, but died within a year. His widow migrated to Paris and married pianist and polymath Julian Fontana. Juana and Julian had one son, Enriqueta's half brother, Julian (Jules) Camillo Adam Fontana, who was born in 1853. Enriqueta Tennant was raised a Roman Catholic and completed her education in New York, London and Paris. Arthur Peake
Arthur Samuel Peake (1865–1929) was an English biblical scholar, born at Leek, Staffordshire, and educated at St John's College, Oxford. He was the first holder of the Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis, Rylands Chair of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis in the Victoria University of Manchester, University of Manchester, from its establishment as an independent institution in 1904. Thomas Walter Manson
Thomas Walter Manson was an English biblical scholar. Born in North Shields in 1893, he was educated at Tynemouth Municipal High School and the University of Glasgow where he was awarded an M.A. In 1922 he entered Westminster College, Cambridge, for training as a minister of the Presbyterian Church of England, and concurrently Christ's College where he read for the Oriental Tripos. In 1925 he was ordained as a minister and after a period at the Jewish Mission Institute in Bethnal Green he became minister at Falstone Church, Northumberland, in 1926. In the same year he married Nora Wallace. While at Falstone his first book, ''The Teaching of Jesus'', was published. This book established him as a New Testament scholar. In 1932 he was appointed Yates Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis at Mansfield College, Oxford. Barnabas Lindars
Barnabas Lindars (born Frederick Chevallier Lindars; 1923–1991) was an English New Testament scholar. Born 11 June 1923, Lindars was educated at Altrincham Grammar School and then studied at St John's College, Cambridge. He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1949. After teaching at the University of Cambridge (where he was Dean of Jesus College), Lindars served as Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester from 1978 to 1990. Biblical Criticism
Biblical criticism is the use of critical analysis to understand and explain the Bible. During the eighteenth century, when it began as ''historical-biblical criticism,'' it was based on two distinguishing characteristics: (1) the concern to avoid dogma and bias by applying a neutral, non-sectarian, reason-based judgment to the study of the Bible, and (2) the belief that the reconstruction of the historical events behind the texts, as well as the history of how the texts themselves developed, would lead to a correct understanding of the Bible. This sets it apart from earlier, pre-critical methods; from the anti-critical methods of those who oppose criticism-based study; from later post-critical orientation, and from the many different types of criticism which biblical criticism transformed into in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
