Ruyterwacht is a poor white northern suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, bordering the industrial area of Epping and the formerly Cape Coloured neighborhood of Elsie's River as well as the GrandWest Casino. Eppingtuin ("Epping Garden Village"), as Ruyterwacht was once known, began as a subsidized housing project for underprivileged/poor white South Africans which has now been seized by a property company Communicare whom has unlawfully sold the subsidized social housing and evicted poor families. In its early years as an independent township, it was administered by the Urban Housing Bureau under the Cape Town Divisional Council. Cape Coloureds () are a South African ethnic group consisted primarily of persons of mixed race and Khoisan descent. Although Coloureds form a minority group within South Africa, they are the predominant population group in the Western Cape. Epping, Cape Town
Epping is an industrial area of Cape Town that is situated to the south of Thornton, Cape Town, Thornton, east of Pinelands, Cape Town, Pinelands and north of Langa, Cape Town, Langa. Epping Industria was first developed in the late 1940s. Industrial development was initially slow and in the early 1950s the circular Gunners Circle was used as a race track for cars. When industrial development picked up in the late 1950s the racing was stopped. The completion of the Athlone Power Station close by assisted in the proliferation of industrial businesses into the area in the mid 1960s. Elsie's River
Elsie's River (Elsiesrivier in Afrikaans) is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. History Elsies River was probably named after Elsje van Suurwaarde who farmed in the area in 1698. Baptized on 8 October 1662 in the Cape of Good Hope, Elsje was a matriarch who outlived her husbands and worked the land until she died. After her death, her farm passed through the hands of many landowners. In the mid, to late 1800s Elsies River operated as a halt. The Transatlantic Rail from Cape Town Central had a major stop at Elsies River Station. People with wagons from surrounding areas would gather to meet the train at the halt (hence the name Halt Road still today). There was ample water in the Elsies Kraal River to quench thirsty horses and the Arcadia Coffee House served much-needed refreshments for tired travellers.
