Ruth Revels
Ruth Revels (1936 - March 14, 2016) was an American Indian Activist and educator who became the founder and executive director of the Guilford Native American Association (GNAA). Revels graduated with an English degree in 1958 from Pembroke State College. She fought to protect and honor the university's heritage. Ruth Revels died on March 14, 2016. Early life Ruth Revels grew up in Robeson County, NC in the 1940s and was an American Indian of the Lumbee tribe. She experienced a unique three-way segregation between white Americans, African Americans, and Indian Americans. Revels grew up in a low income household on the outskirts of Pembroke. Her family was a farm family and neither of her parents had graduated from high school. She married Lonnie Revels, who along with Revels is credited with running Ku Klux Klan members out of Roberson county in 1958. Pembroke is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. It is about 90 miles inland and northwest from the Atlantic Coast. The population was 2,973, at the 2010 census. The town is the seat of the state-recognized Lumbee tribe of North Carolina, as well as the home of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Lumbee People
The Lumbee are a Native American people primarily centered in Robeson, Hoke, Cumberland and Scotland counties in North Carolina. They also live in surrounding states and Baltimore, Maryland. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is a state-recognized tribe in North Carolina numbering approximately 55,000 enrolled members. The Lumbee take their name from the Lumber River, which winds through Robeson County. Pembroke, North Carolina, is their economic, cultural, and political center. According to the 2000 United States Census report, 89% of the population of the town of Pembroke, North Carolina, identify as Lumbee; 40% of Robeson County's population identify as Lumbee. The Lumbee Tribe was recognized by North Carolina in 1885. Pembroke State College
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP or UNC Pembroke) is a public university in Pembroke, North Carolina. UNC Pembroke is a master's level degree-granting university and part of the University of North Carolina system. Its history is intertwined with that of the Lumbee nation. History The educational institution that developed into UNC Pembroke has its origins in the circumstances of the post-Civil War South. This school was a part of the effort of the Lumbee Nation in North Carolina to preserve their unique identity. Access and authority over their own educational system were understood to be of key importance to retaining Lumbee culture, instilling a sense of pride, and improving the group's economic and social conditions.
