Ruth Amelia Ocumárez y Apataño (born 10 December 1983, in Santo Domingo) is a Dominican beauty queen, actress, and model. Born and raised in Santo Domingo, Ocumárez became a celebrity in her nation by becoming the first woman of predominantly African heritage to represent the Dominican Republic at Miss Universe. Due to her outstanding dark complexion and “bubbly” personality, she was given the nickname "La Diosa de Ébano" (English: The Ebony Goddess) by the Dominican public and press along with the general expectation of assured placement on coronation night. Miss Universe Dominicana 2001 was held on April 9, 2001. There were 26 candidates, representing provinces and municipalities, who entered. The winner would represent the Dominican Republic at Miss Universe 2001 and Miss América Latina 2002. The Miss Mundo Dominicana would enter Miss World 2001. Miss Universe 2002, the 51st Miss Universe pageant, was held on May 29, 2002, at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. 75 delegates competed in this year. Oxana Fedorova of Russia was crowned by Denise Quiñones of Puerto Rico as her successor at the end of the event. Fedorova was dethroned four months later, ostensibly because she could not travel to fulfill her duties, and first runner-up Justine Pasek of Panama took over the Miss Universe title. To date, the 2002 pageant is the only time the 1st runner-up has assumed the title when the reigning Miss Universe became incapable of fulfilling her duties, as explained in the disclaimer traditionally read out by hosts before announcing the winner in the live show. Carmen Jovet Esteves (born June 9, 1944) is a journalist and the first Puerto Rican woman news anchor in Puerto Rico. Early years Carmen Jovet Esteves, daughter of Manolín Jovet-Viruet and Doña Carmen "Cuca" Esteves, was born and raised in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico into a family where having a good education was important.
