Ruth Alexander
Ruth Blaney Alexander (May 18, 1905 – September 18, 1930) was an early female pilot in the United States who established several records in altitude and distance during 1929 and 1930. Youth Ruth Blaney was raised in Irving, Kansas in Marshall County by parents William T. and Lillian F. Blaney. Ruth had a natural interest in mechanics and assisted her father who ran a hardware store. Her first flight in an airplane occurred on July 4, 1920 when she took a ride with a local barnstormer at the age of 15. Searching for her career path, she worked at a general store and at a beauty parlor near Kansas City. She married briefly in 1925 but the marriage was annulled soon afterwards. On June 16, 1925 she married Mac P. Alexander, a farmer from Olathe, Kansas. They lived together for two years but separated due to irreconcilable differences. Irving, Kansas
Irving is a ghost town in Marshall County, Kansas, United States, located six miles southeast of the city of Blue Rapids along the Big Blue River. Irving was one of the many towns affected by "Big Dam Foolishness" during the construction of Tuttle Creek Lake about ten miles to the south. Although the lake never reached the town, the federal government forced remaining residents to vacate the town. History Irving was founded in 1859 by a small group from Lyons, Iowa. They named the town after author Washington Irving. In the spring of 1860, a severe drought ruined crops and forced some farmers to lose their land. Over the summer the area was wracked with fierce winds and thunderstorms that blew down buildings, took roofs and damaged the saw mill. During the fall, some residents chose to leave and return to Iowa. In 1866, the community was invaded by grasshoppers that also destroyed crops and damaged trees. John Gilbert "Tex" Rankin
John Gilbert "Tex" Rankin (January 20, 1894 – February 23, 1947) was an aerobatic pilot, barnstormer, air racer, and flight instructor from the 1920s to the 1940s. He created the Rankin Flying Service which trained thousands of pilots at Rankin Field for the US Army Air Force in World War II. He was the 1935 US Aerobatic champion and 1938 World Aerobatic champion. Early life Rankin left home at the age of 16 and joined the United States Army. He served in the Aeronautical Division, U.S. Signal Corps which gave him an interest in aviation. After being discharged in 1919, he moved to the State of Washington to learn to fly. Aerobatics and flight instructor career In 1920, Rankin opened his first flying school in Walla Walla, Washington. Rankin moved his flight school to Portland, Oregon in 1922, where he established the Rankin Flying Service. Blue Rapids, Kansas
Blue Rapids is a city in Marshall County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 928. History The first endeavor to establish a town below the junction of the rivers, in 1857, failed due to misfortunes of two of the three participants. No further attempt to utilize the impressive water power was made until 1869–1870, when a colony of about 50 families from Genesee County, New York moved in, purchased land and water power rights, and began establishing a community. The Blue Rapids Town Company was formed, and by the end of 1870 the population was about 250. In 1872, Blue Rapids was incorporated as a city of third class under the statutes of Kansas. Among the first projects in 1870 were a stone dam and a wrought iron bridge built on the Big Blue River. Loma Portal (from Latin ''porta'' "gate") is a neighborhood in the community of Point Loma in San Diego, California. It is a hilly area northwest of Rosecrans Street and northeast of Nimitz Boulevard, overlooking San Diego Bay.
