Russell Island is an island, a town and a locality in the City of Redland, Queensland, Australia. The island is also known by its traditional Aboriginal name of ''Canaipa''. In the , Russell Island had a population of 2,836 people. Geography Russell Island in Redland City is the biggest of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, situated between the mainland and North Stradbroke Island. The island is eight kilometres long (north-to-south) and nearly three kilometres wide. The channel separating it from the mainland is known as Main Channel and the channel separating it from North Stradbroke Island is known as Canaipa Passage. James Stodart
James Stodart (1849–1922) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Politics James Stodart was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in Logan in a by-election on 15 August 1896. He was Chairman of Committees from 13 July 1911 to 15 April 1915. He held Logan until 16 March 1918. Personal life James Stodart married Elizabeth Henrietta Noble Gair in Melbourne in 1878. They had three children, Robert, Georgina "Nina" and Charles. Ironbark
Ironbark is a common name of a number of species in three taxonomic groups within the genus ''Eucalyptus'' that have dark, deeply furrowed bark. Instead of being shed annually as in many of the other species of ''Eucalyptus'', the dead bark accumulates on the trees, forming the fissures. It becomes rough after drying out and becomes impregnated with kino (red gum), a dark red tree sap exuded by the tree. The tree is so named for the apparent resemblance of its bark to iron slag. The bark is resistant to fire and heat and protects the living tissue within the trunk and branches from fire. In cases of extreme fire, where leaves and shoots are removed, the protective bark aids in protecting epicormic buds which allow the tree to reshoot. Being a very dense, hard wood, a length of ironbark is often used as a bug shoe on the bottom of a ship's skeg to protect it from shipworms. The Yugambeh ( ''(see alternative spellings)'', also known as the Minyangbal ( , are an Aboriginal Australian people of south-east Queensland and the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, their territory lies between the Logan and Tweed rivers. A term for an Aboriginal of the Yugambeh tribe is Mibunn (also written as ''Miban/Mibanj'', ''Mibin, Mibiny, Mebbon, Meebin''), which is derived from the word for the Wedge-tailed Eagle. Redland Bay
Redland Bay is a coastal semi-rural locality in the City of Redland, Queensland, Australia. In the , Redland Bay had a population of 14,958 people. Since the first European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, Redland Bay has remained a farming and fishing-based area until the mid-20th century when some of the farms were subdivided and improved transport infrastructure made it possible for residents to commute the 35 kilometers into Brisbane. Geography Redland Bay is at the southern end of Redland City, south-east of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland.
