Russell H. Nevins
Russell Hubbard Nevins (January 10, 1785 – November 27, 1854) was an American banker and the president of the New York Stock Exchange. Early life Nevins was born on January 10, 1785, in Norwich, Connecticut. He was a son of David Nevins of Norwich and the former Mary Hubbard of Lyme, Connecticut. Among his siblings was brothers Henry and Rufus Nevins and younger sister, Elizabeth Nevis, was married to fellow banker Elihu Townsend. Career He was a founding partner, with his brother-in-law Elihu Townsend, of the Wall Street brokerage firm Nevins, Townsend & Co. From 1830 to 1831, he served as the fifth president of the New York Stock Exchange. Nevins also invested in real estate, developing the Boerum Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn with Charles Hoyt. Personal life Nevins died unmarried in New York City on November 27, 1854, and was originally interred at New York Marble Cemetery. He was later re-interred at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Green-Wood Cemetery is a cemetery in the western portion of Brooklyn, New York City. The cemetery is located between South Slope/ Greenwood Heights, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Borough Park, Kensington, and Sunset Park, and lies several blocks southwest of Prospect Park. Its boundaries include, among other streets, 20th Street to the northeast, Fifth Avenue to the northwest, 36th and 37th Streets to the southwest, Fort Hamilton Parkway to the south, and McDonald Avenue to the east. Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 as a rural cemetery, in a time of rapid urbanization when churchyards in New York City were becoming overcrowded. The Nevins Street station is an express station on the IRT Eastern Parkway Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Nevins Street, Flatbush Avenue, and Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn, it is served by the 2 and 4 trains at all times, the 3 train all times except late nights, and the 5 train on weekdays only. __TOC__ History The IRT Brooklyn/Eastern Parkway Line was contracted in 1904 as a two-track line under Fulton Street expanding to three tracks under Flatbush Avenue, to end at the Long Island Rail Road terminal under Atlantic Avenue. The Eastern Parkway Line is one of the lines of the A Division of the New York City Subway, stretching from Downtown Brooklyn south along Flatbush Avenue and east along Eastern Parkway to Crown Heights. New York Marble Cemetery
The New York Marble Cemetery is a burial ground established in 1830 in what is now the East Village of Manhattan. It occupies the interior of the block bounded by 2nd Street, Second Avenue, 3rd Street, and the Bowery. It is entered through an alleyway with an iron gate at each end, located between 41 and 43 Second Avenue. About 2,100 burials are recorded in the cemetery's written registers, most from prominent professional and merchant families in New York City. The New York Marble Cemetery, which was New York City's first non-sectarian burial place, should not be confused with the nearby New York ''City'' Marble Cemetery one block east, which is entirely separate, and was established one year later.
