Munro's Books is a large independent bookstore in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Munro's has a staff of 30 and a large children's book section. The store celebrated its 50th anniversary in September 2013. Since 1984, the store has been located in downtown Victoria in a neo-classical building ( Royal Bank Building) with a coffered ceiling, designed in 1909 for the Royal Bank of Canada by architect Thomas Hooper. Munro's Books has been described by journalist Allan Fotheringham as "the most magnificent bookstore in Canada, possibly in North America." The store was founded in 1963 by Jim Munro and his first wife Alice Munro, the 2013 Nobel Prize-winning short-story writer; at the start, its stock was mostly paperbacks. It was formed by the Sept. 2, 1980 merger of the ''Victoria Daily Times'', established in 1884, and the ''British Colonist'' (later the ''Daily Colonist''), established in 1858 by Amor De Cosmos who was later British Columbia's second Premier. Douglas Street is a road in Victoria, British Columbia. It is named after Sir James Douglas, the second Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island. A segment of the Trans-Canada Highway, the main part of Douglas Street runs approximately from Dallas Road on the Georgia Strait to just north of Saanich Road, where the Trans-Canada curves westward towards the Western Communities. The intersection of Douglas Street and Dallas Road is the western end of the Trans Canada Highway, known as Mile 0. There is a small monument at the corner to recognize this fact along with a statue of Terry Fox. North from the water Douglas passes the Beacon Lodge, then forms the western border of Beacon Hill Park before passing behind the Empress Hotel and the Royal British Columbia Museum.
